Omahaisms - Things You Have To Know No Left Turn: No really, you can turn left along Dodge along the area roughly between 30th St. & 60th as long as you're turning left into a business. The city has a law that allows this but it's not posted. Many longtimers are still unaware and will honk at you.
Runza:
A delicious sandwich of cooked beef & cabbage stuffed into a breaded shell. It's only found at fast food restaurants called.... Runza.
The Reuben: The best sandwich ever was invented in Omaha, so the story goes. A few other cities have the same claim. The truth is, it was invented at a restaurant in The Blackstone Building at 36th & Farnam, which is where Omaha native Fred Astaire used to dance. The restaurant is no longer there, but across the street you'll find The Crescent Moon, which has the best Reuben in Omaha.
CWS: It s
tands for The College World Series, an annual June event at Rosenblatt Stadium which features hot guys walking around shirtless. Oh yeah, there are baseball games too that determine the national collegiate championship... but it's the atmosphere that matters most.
This page will continue to build as I think of more Omahaisms
The Run:
Former name of "The Omaha Mining Company, a gay bar on Leavenworth. Despite the name change, most people still call it "The Run".
Norfolk: Is t
he town northwest of Omaha pronouned Norfolk or Norfork? The town's original name was pronounced and spelled "Norfork" to reflect "the north fork of the river". A dimwit at the U.S. Post Office in Washington, D.C. changed the name without reason. The town was stuck with Norfolk, but traditionalists pronounce it Norfork.
