Steve Opfer began service with the Department of Mass Communications and Journalism at Norfolk State University in August 1993. He teaches Web Design, Media Writing, and Newswriting every semester and Broadcast News Writing/Reporting and Radio/TV Announcing once per year. In the past, he has also taught Basic Writing, Media Technologies, Copy Editing, Interviewing and Information Gathering, Film Criticism, Advanced Broadcast Writing, and Electronic News Field Production and Editing.

In addition to his teaching duties, Mr. Opfer currently serves as the faculty advisor to SpartanEcho.Com; the executive producer of "Faces," a student-produced television interview program; the executive producer of "Spartan Week," a student-produced news magazine utilizing CNN Newsource; the producer and manager of the department's web site; the department's assessment writer; an active member of the department's assessment, curriculum, and technology development committees; and an academic advisor to more than 40 broadcasting majors. He also regularly participates in student orientation, recruitment, and fund-raising activities. In the past, Mr. Opfer has served as the departmental assessment coordinator; the departmental liaison to the NSU Honors Program; the news director of WNSB 91.1 FM (a National Public Radio affiliate); and the co-executive producer of "This Week," a student-produced television news magazine that spearheaded student use of CNN Newsource.

Also, Mr. Opfer has been a member of the School of Liberal Arts Technology Committee (2003-present); the producer and manager of the Virginia Association of Communication Arts and Sciences web site (2000-2003); a design consultant for Headgate Studios and Sierra Sports (1998-2000); a trainer/mentor for the 1998 NSU Office of Information Technology and Collegis Distance Learning Workshop for NSU faculty; the School of Arts and Letters representative on the 1995-96 NSU Home Page Committee; an NSU representative at the 1995 NASA Langley Internet Fair; the coordinator and host of the 1995 COX Communications Internet Workshop at NSU; an NSU representative at Internet '95 hosted by iTRiBE; a 1995 AEJMC-Freedom Forum Teaching Fellow; a 1995 C-SPAN in the Classroom Fellow; a 1994 American Press Institute Fellow; a 1994 recipient of a John S. and James L. Knight Foundation grant to subsidize journalism research and reporting at the Daily Press; and a judge for the 1993 United States Army Training and Doctrine Command Journalism Competition.
