I have installed new struts - Gabriel Pro Ryder Premium Gas Struts and finally connected the front sway bar.  The sway bar was missing one end link, and the other end link had no rubber left, just a bent threaded rod that had to be cut off.   After installing the struts I had the front end aligned.

After cleaning the engine compartment once with spray can degreaser, and once with Simple Green and a scrub brush, the paint still had ground-in dirt.

 

So, once again I broke out the cleaning gear and spent about an hour scrubbing the inside of the engine compartment.

This time I was able to get the ground-in dirt off using a scrubber pad and a wire brush (toothbrush size), leaving just the paint dings to take care of.
