Karen Ko
Optimist Club President
Karen Ko has been a proud member of the Santa Barbara community for seven years, first as an undergraduate, and now as an employee of UCSB. She began her non-profit work after college as a Campaign Executive with Santa Barbara County’s United Way, and through this experience met inspiring individuals who also had the heart
for community service. She was especially touched by agencies whose primary focus was on the development of young children, and thus joined the staff at Girls Incorporated of Greater Santa Barbara. Although Karen now works for UCSB in the East Asian Studies Department, she still makes volunteering and attending non-profit events a priority in her life.
During her spare time, Karen can probably be found out at the beach or a field somewhere throwing a Frisbee around with friends. As a past coach, captain, and player of the UCSB women’s ultimate frisbee team Burning Skirts, she still loves to play the sport and occasionally travels on the weekends to play in club tournaments in the Southwest. Karen also enjoys photography, road biking, web design, meeting new people, and babysitting her friend’s ridiculously cute daughter.
"Optimist Creed" Promise yourself •To be so strong nothing disturbs your peace of mind
•To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to everyone you meet
•To make all your friends feel like there is something in them
• To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true
•To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and expect only the best
•To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
• To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
• To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
• To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
• To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
