Tony Tieu
Optimist Club Vice President
Tony Tieu seems to be following the footstep of Shari Johnston, who sponsored him into the Optimist Club at UCSB when she was club president in 2003. In 2004, he took over her job as Graduate Program Advisor for Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology (MCDB) and Biomolecular Science & Engineering (BSME), and the next year, he became club president. But according to Tony, that’s where it ends --
he won’t be relocating to Minneapolis any time soon.
Tony grew up in San Francisco. In 1992, he came down to Santa Barbara to attend UCSB. After two years at the university, he left to pursue a career in professional skateboarding. After retiring from the pro circuit in 2001, he returned to UCSB, and graduated with two bachelor’s degrees. Tony said there’s still more schooling for him; he plans to pursue a graduate degree in international business. Tony loves traveling. In total, he has been to 9 countries and 40+ states in the US. He enjoys traveling because it gives him the opportunity to meet people from a variety of backgrounds. He has also studied in Vietnam and taught English in China. Tony, being young-at-heart, enjoys interacting with the youth. For three years, he served as the athletic spokesperson for the Tri-County Regional Team (TCRT) in Santa Barbara promoting anti-tobacco behavior to youths. He even has a poster.
"Optimist Creed" Promise yourself •To be so strong nothing disturbs your peace of mind
•To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to everyone you meet
•To make all your friends feel like there is something in them
• To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true
•To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and expect only the best
•To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
• To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
• To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
• To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
• To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
