Al Turnbull

Geoffrey Alan Turnbull (known as "AL") was born in 1918 in Canada. In 1922, Al moved to Pasadena. Al flew a torpedo bomber from the carrier Bunker Hill on 2 cruises in the combat area of south and central Pacific. In 1946, after discharged from the Navy, he joined the Optimist Club of South Gate. Al retired from Pasadena City College as administrator of the Business Education Department extended day division. In 1980, Al bought a retirement home in Goleta, which he rented until moving into it in 1988. After moving to Goleta, Al joined the Goleta Breakfast Optimist Club and the Board of Directors of Goleta Valley Beautiful (in 1992). He was also a charter member of UCSB Optimist club. When his wife passed away in 1999, Al moved into retirement home Friendship Manor. Al plays golf weekly and travels as much as time will allow.

"Optimist Creed"
Promise yourself

To be so strong nothing disturbs your peace of mind
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to everyone you meet
To make all your friends feel like there is something in them
• To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true
To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and expect only the best

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
• To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
• To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
• To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
• To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
