Helen H. Ottemann Munderloh
March 14, 1865 - March 4, 1931
Funeral services were conducted, Tuesday afternoon for Mrs. John Munderloh, who passed away suddenly the preceding Friday night. Following brief services at the John Munderloh home, two miles southeast of Bancroft, services were conducted by the pastor of the deceased, the Rev. W. E: Homann, in St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The pastor based a German and English funeral address on Hoses 6, 1: "Come and let us return unto the Lord; for He hath torn, and He will heal us; He hath smitten and He will bind us up." The choir sang "Abide With Me". Mrs. W. E. Homann served as organist.
The great gathering of mourners and friends, 'far too many to be seated in the spacious church, and a mass of beautiful floral offerings bore testimony to the esteem in which the departed, was held by all who knew her and their deep sympathy for those so suddenly bereaved. An idea of the size of the gathering may be obtained from the fact that more than thirty minutes were required to give all an opportunity to view the body of the departed. Interment was made in the local cemetery.
Helene Henrietta Munderloh, nee 'Ottemann, was born March 14, 1865, at Twelbach, Oldenburg, Germany. At the age of six years, in the year 1871, she came to America with her parents, brothers and sisters, to live on a farm six miles north of Hooper. It was there she received her schooling and Christian instruction and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in the year 1878.
June 13, 1883, she was united in marriage with John Munderloh and went to live on his farm, five miles south of Bancroft. The Lord blessed this happy union with ten children, six sons and four daughters, all of whom survive the departed.
Early in the year 1920 the family moved to the farm two miles southeast of Bancroft, where Mrs. Munderloh resided until her death.
For many years the departed was a member of Zion Lutheran Church (Rev. W. Harms, pastor) and since 1920 of the local St. Paul's Lutheran congregation. She soon became an active member of the local Lutheran Ladies Aid Society and enjoyed the esteem of her co-workers in that organization.
About a year ago Mrs. Munderloh was stricken with a severe attack of influenza and rheumatism, from which she recovered very slowly and never fully, finding the work in her home on the farm increasingly trying and difficult. Early this year her husband purchased a home in town, in which she hoped to find opportunity for the rest she needed in her declining years. A medical examination a week before her death revealed a grave condition of her heart, making the need for quiet and rest even more imperative, though she was not confined to her bed. Last Friday afternoon she called on her doctor, who found the condition of her heart apparently improved and in cheerful spirit Mrs. Munderloh proceeded to the house in town, into which she expected to move this week, to plan some decorations and direct other preparations for its occupancy. She retired that evening' shortly before ten o'clock, little thinking that she would not rise again. Shortly after eleven o'clock she grew restless, complained of a pain 'above her heart, and within a few minutes that organ had ceased to function and she had found the rest of the children of God. Thus quickly and unexpectedly a loving and faithful wife and mother, a good and kindly neighbor, a faithful Christian and active church 'member was taken hence, and her soul removed into the home above. Her body now lies, peacefully sleeping, awaiting the summons of the last day to be reunited with the soul, now already happy and blessed in presence of her Savior.
Mrs. Munderloh attained an age of 65 years, 11 months, and 20 days. She is survived by her husband; six sons, Herman, John, Otto, Walter and Rudolph, all of Bancroft, and Alfred of- Detroit, Mich.; four daughters, Mrs. Paul Wegner, Mrs. Johanna Copple, Mrs. Frank Buchholz, all of Bancroft, and Mrs. Chas. Copple of Rosalie, Nebr.; 19 grandchildren; two brothers, Henry and George Ottemann of Hooper, Nebr.; four sisters, Mrs. Gerhard Heyne, Hooper Nebr., Miss Rebecka Ottemann and Mrs. Mary Heine of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Meta Schultz of Colorado and a large circle of relatives and friends.
We extend our sincere sympathy to those so sorely bereaved.
