Arthur Ernest George Ortmann
May 7, 1917 - June 13, 1998

Arthur Ernest George ortmann was born on May 7th, 1917, the son of Robert and Clara (Siebrandt) Ortmann.  He was baptized into the Christian faith on May 27th, 1917 and St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Bancroft, Nebraska by Rev. Walter E. Homann.  He was confirmed May 31th, 1931 also at St. Paul's Lutheran Church by Rev. Homann.  His confirmation verse was taken from  1 Timothy 6:12 NIV "Fight the good fight of the faith.  Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses."

Arthur married Harriet Copple on Christmas Day 1941.  On September 23th, 1943, he left the West Coast on a troop ship headed for the South Pacific.  He was with the Sixth Army 6th division in New Guinea, and was in active combat 218 consecutive days on Luzon.  He helped to liberate the captives at Cabanatuan, Philippines and he earned the Bronze Star and a Battlefield Commission.  He was wounded in the Battle of Munoz, where he was awarded the Purple Heart.  After a short tour in Korea, Arthur returned to Bancroft on December 1th, 1945.  After the war Arthur returned to farming.

He harmed outside of Bancroft until his retirement.  He was a longtime member of the rural fire board, served on the District 62 School Board, Farmer's Co-op Board, and held numerous positions for St. Paul's Lutheran Church.  Arthur was also a dedicated member to the American Legion Post 191 and the VFW Post 4912.

Arthur is survived by his wife Harriet of Bancroft and five children:  Robert Ortmann of Omaha, NE; Marcia Rabe of Lincoln; John Ortmann of Lincoln; Mary Gehring of Scottsdale, AZ; and Lori Gall of Clarkson; and nine grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sister Ruth Maas of West Point, and his brother Alvin also of West Point, Lewis Mehling of Sidney, NE and Elmer Mehling of Bayard, NE.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers.
