Winners
Announced Monday, January 16 Best
Film - Drama:
X
- Brokeback Mountain
The Constant Gardener
Good Night, and Good Luck.
A History of Violence
Match Point
Thoughts:
This one wasn't surprising. I knew when it won Screenplay AND Director
that it was going to win this one, no question. And...yeah, not a lot else
to add. This movie is so winning Best Picture. I just love that it is the
one to beat this year. OH, and stick a fork in Match Point. It's
deader than Kinsey was two years ago. It ain't winnin' nothing, and
Woody will be lucky to even get into Screenplay now.
Best Film - Comedy/Musical:
Mrs. Henderson Presents
Pride & Prejudice
The Producers
The Squid and the Whale
X
- Walk the Line
Thoughts:
I really hate that this movie won here. Mainly because it was only
nodded for two other awards, and the fact that I think it's Ray Part II
(though still a little bit better than that one). And I loved P&P and
thought that even Producers deserved it over WtL. It needed this
win though to keep it alive in the BP race. And that it is. Here's your
fifth nominee, and now I highly doubt any other movie sneaking in and
knocking it out.
Best Director:
Woody Allen, Match Point
George Clooney, Good Night, and Good Luck.
Peter Jackson, King Kong
X
- Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain
Fernando Meirelles, The Constant Gardener
Steven Spielberg, Munich
Thoughts:
I am glad I stuck with Lee. This just goes to show that he has
unbelievable support (much like with his movie) and his speech was once
again fresh, funny, and classy. I think Director is done now too. It's
really just all about Brokeback this year.
Best Screenplay:
Brokeback Mountain
Crash
X
-
Good Night, and Good Luck.
Match Point
Munich
Thoughts:
And...yeah. Echo the last sentence above. Thank GOD that Crash lost.
I sadly think though that the Oscar will go to it, however. I thought
they'd go with GNaGL, but was wrong.
Best Actor - Drama:
Russell Crowe, Cinderella Man
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote
Terrence Howard, Hustle & Flow
X
- Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain
David Strathairn, Good Night, and Good Luck
Thoughts:
Missed it here. They love to give it to younger and the bigger star,
but Hoffman winning here just shows how this category is sealed up for the
rest of the Oscar season. It's last year all over again, except that even
though there are more deserving winners, the one beating them is actually
deserving of awards (how annoying was Jamie Foxx again last night? VERY!).
Oh, and sorry, but I think Howard is smug and really comes off as
arrogant. I hope Crowe or Daniels gets that last slot in Actor anyway,
though I doubt it happens.
Best Actress - Drama:
Maria Bello, A History of Violence
X
- Felicity Huffman, Transamerica
Gwyneth Paltrow, Proof
Charlize Theron, North Country
Ziyi Zhang, Memoirs of a Geisha
Thoughts:
I am so happy for Huffman, mainly because aside from the ISA, this is
the only time we'll see her winning for the movie and I just think she is
such a great actress. I love her on DH (even though the writing is shit)
and she's just one of those people who is just so warm and lovely. She is
the only one that can give Reese a run for her money, though Reese is so
winning Oscar.
Best
Actor - Comedy/Musical:
Pierce Brosnan, Matador
Jeff Daniels, The Squid and the Whale
Johnny Depp, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory
Nathan Lane, The Producers
Cillian Murphy, Breakfast on Pluto
X
- Joaquin Phoenix, Walk the Line
Thoughts:
Haven't seen Brosnan, Daniels, Depp, or Murphy, but I wish this had
been less tired and blahsy of a choice. Phoenix is fine and by winning
this he went into lock status at Oscar, but...eh.
Best Actress - Comedy/Musical:
Judi Dench, Mrs. Henderson Presents
Keira Knightley, Pride & Prejudice
Laura Linney, The Squid and the Whale
Sarah Jessica Parker, The Family Stone
X
- Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line
Thoughts:
I hope her fashion gets better before she wins on March 5th, because
she is doing just that: winning.
Best Supporting Actor:
George Clooney, Syriana
Matt Dillon, Crash
Will Farrell, The Producers
X
- Paul Giamatti, Cinderella Man
Bob Hoskins, Mrs. Henderson Presents
Thoughts:
I am going to HATE it if Oscar follows the Globes and Clooney loses
Screenplay to Crash and then gets a makeup "sorry we couldn't
give you one you ACTUALLY DESERVE" Oscar. Sorry, I just think this
performance even getting nominated is a joke. Nothing award-worthy about
it, IMO. Needless to say, this category is still up in the air, though I
think Giamatti is winning SAG, then Oscar. I have to hope so.
Best Supporting Actress:
Scarlett Johannson, Match Point
Shirley MacLaine, In Her Shoes
Frances McDormand, North Country
X
- Rachel Weisz, The Constant Gardener
Michelle Williams, Brokeback Mountain
Thoughts:
I am so glad I stuck with Weisz. Her winning here shows that she can
win Oscar, which will end up being between she, Adams, and Williams. With
Brokeback nearly sweeping the way it did, I was a little surprised that
Williams didn't win. I think SAG will go for Williams though and then
Oscar.
Best Score:
Brokeback Mountain
Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
King Kong
X
- Memoirs of a Geisha
Syriana
Thoughts:
Eh. Just...eh.
Best Song: Brokeback Mountain ("A Love That Will Never Grow
Old")
Christmas in Love ("Christmas in Love")
Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe ("Wunderkind")
X
- The Producers ("There's Nothing Like A Show On Broadway")
Transamerica ("Travelin' Thru")
Thoughts:
I love the Globes' big "FUCK YOU!" to the Oscars. This is by
far the best song of the year and I am so happy that this won here,
because it is by far the best of the year. Overall I got 8/13, which isn't
too shabby, I guess.
