Heart Over Mind

Blanchett, Freeman, Swank, and Foxx holding their won Oscars.

Million Dollar Baby Pulls It Off & Sneaks Past The Big Epic
So much for our last minute jitters! You know, immediately after Cate Blanchett won, I knew that it was probably going to be a night where nothing too shocking would happen winner wise. Nothing too shocking did happen and part of me is glad and part of me is not. It's a very mixed feeling. Morgan Freeman finally won (and gave the BEST SPEECH of the night...short and to the point) and it was so great for him. It's high time that man is rewarded an Oscar. Jamie Foxx (and I hate to do it again, but he had the WORST WIN of the night) won and he goes 3/3 with the award for most arrogant and pompous speech. I am so glad there wasn't a surprise there, however, because we would not have heard the end of it for months to come. Hilary Swank ended up prevailing and when it was time to give out the award, it looked as if M$B might not be the big favorite to win after all, so I thought Bening would prevail, but it was the Swankathon. I love her to death and think this is a deserving win, but she gave the WORST SPEECH of the night, even though she included the Irish name that she received in the movie. So there's acting, what about the rest?

When The Aviator won Film Editing, I was so sure that it was gonna end up taking Picture, and honestly, I am still surprised and shocked that Million Dollar Baby edged out and took this. Even with the Eastwood win, which garnered the "Awwwwwwww" MOMENT OF THE NIGHT with Julia (who saw her coming?) wiping her lipstick off of his lips, I was still surprised that with FIVE other wins, the big epic didn't quite have enough to take it. I was so happy for this though because you all know my feelings about that movie. And the Screenplay categories are officially the 'make-up' categories of the night. I was so happy for both of these wins, but I was especially happy that Kaufman and Gondry (who had the BEST WIN of the night) got their well-earned awards. FINALLY, he is recognized. And the great Kate was so happy for them and for Kaczmarek who won score for Finding Neverland. And this year she seemed the least pissed about not winning. Don't worry Kate, your day is coming. So technically the biggest winner of the night was The Aviator with 5 wins and the big prize winner was Baby with 4 wins, including BP. Glad to see though that the Academy voted with their hearts and not with their minds and great for them to pick a movie that will easily go down as one of the best and most classic of our time.

The MOST SURPRISING WIN of the night was surprisingly a small award called Original Song. I don't think anyone saw that coming. Loved that speech as well and that guy basically saying 'screw you' Academy for not letting me sing my OWN song. Regarding the Song performances, the worst was Counting Crows. Ugh. I didn't mind Beyoncé's performances at all, but three songs was a bit too much, especially joining in with Josh Groban when he could have sung it alone. So what about the new format of the show? I again have mixed feelings. I loved the graphics and past clips being shown above and on the floor of the stage, but there was something that felt really odd about people losing on stage and there was especially something odd about people accepting their awards in the crowd, which I totally did not like. The pace of the show was quickened, but I still say the other format is a little bit better. Regarding Chris Rock, I gotta say, that he surprised me. He made me laugh more than I thought I would. Even though he is no Martin or Crystal, he still did a respectable job. And I loved the little thing between he and Sean Penn. Very snappy.

Honestly, I might include more 'bests' and 'worsts' later, but I can't think of any right now. I am very tired, even though I decided to ditch school today since I didn't get to bed until 4AM and I would've had to get up at 6AM. Not possible to go to school and then put in 8 hours of work the next day. NOT POSSIBLE. As far as predictions go, if you include the three categories that no one really knows a lot about (Docu. Short, and Animated aside from the big one), I ended up with 17/24, which is like a C- which I guess isn't too bad. I missed Picture, Film Editing, Makeup, Song, and the three mentioned above that almost everyone gets wrong. So without those three I got a 17/21, which is a B-, so YAY! I am proud of that but especially proud that I went 7/8 in the major 8. If only I had stuck with Baby for BP, though I still am surprised that it ended up pulling it off.

So, as I like to say every year, "Another year....Another Oscar!" I know I say it a lot but I can't believe it goes by so fast. Now I will slack off in movie viewing for a couple of months. I know me. Actually, I need to really focus on school, since this has taken up a lot of time that I should have been spending with schoolwork. But WHO CARES?? It's the Oscars! OH! And to finalize this recap of the 2005 Oscars, I of course have made a Best/Worst dressed list. Even though there were no real awful Sally Kirkland-esque dresses, I still wanted to come up with a top 5 for each. Enjoy!
