Western W1 Cymbidium medium NEW!
Also used for zygopetalums and cattleyas- all stages, from germination to replate. Add 60 grams of banana pulp per liter. This is the original W1 formulation from Kevin Western. US$6.50 per 1 liter pouch. Contains
gelling agent.

Western W1.5 orchid seed germination and maintenance medium.
Add 50 mL of coconut liquid for paphs; add 50 grams of banana puree for all other genera. This formulation is new to us- it’s an improvement upon the original W1 formulation from Kevin Western. US$6.50 per 1 liter
pouch. Contains gelling agent.

Western W2 orchid seed germination and maintenance medium.
W2 is the Western formulation for germination and replate of most common genera. Add 60 grams of banana pulp per liter for use in replate of dendrobiums, cattleyas, zygopetalums, and odontoglossums and related
genera. May also use 20 mL/liter of coconut liquid or 50 mL/liter of pineapple juice for germination. Pineapple juice requires pH adjustment. US$6.50 per 1 liter pouch. Contains gelling agent.

|
Western W2.5 orchid seed germination and maintenance medium.
Add 50 mL of coconut liquid for paphs; add 50 grams of banana puree for all other genera. This is a wonderful all-purpose medium that has served us well for years. US$6.50 per 1 liter pouch. Contains gelling agent.

|
Western W3 orchid seed germination and maintenance medium.
Similar to W2.5. Add 50 mL of coconut liquid for paphs; add 50 grams of banana puree for all other genera. This is another great medium for disas, paphs, and other species that prefer low salt concentrations. US$6.50
per 1 liter pouch. Contains gelling agent. BACK IN STOCK!

OspEx 1.0 replate medium.
Designed and formulated to meet our exacting requirements for maintenance of orchid cultures, OspEx 1.0 is the result of years of research and thousands of flasks. This is the same formulation we use for 99% of our
replate work. Reduced osmotic strength in conjunction with enhanced nutrition for extended durations in culture, this formulation has proven to be reliable across a broad range of genera. US$4 per 1 liter pouch.
Contains gelling agent.

O156 replate medium
Hot stuff- too hot for most orchids at full strength! Use at 70% strength, or use our OspEx 1.0 (above) for best results. O156 at 100% strength is still good for stanhopeas, gongoras, vandas, and maybe phals-
anything with big, fat roots that can tolerate strong media. US$3 per 1 liter pouch. Contains gelling agent.

P668 mother flask medium.
The original seed germination medium. Effective on a wide array of tropical epiphytic and terrestrial genera, this is the old standby based on Murashige and Skoog salt base with 20 grams of sugar and all the other
goodies (inositol, peptone, B vitamins- the whole kitchen sink is in there). Inexpensive and reliable. US$3.50 per 1 liter pouch. Contains gelling agent.

Modified P668 mother flask medium (P669)
Our improvement on P668: by adding some B852 banana powder, this formulation prevents the dreaded “brown-out” of protocorms- developing plantlets that turn brown for no good reason. Contains banana, so it’s probably
not good for paph germination, but the concentration is low enough that it won’t faze most “robst” paphs. This is what we use for germination at the OSP, along with Western W2.5 or W3 + coconut. US$6.50 per 1 liter
pouch. Contains gelling agent.

N1 medium
Originally designed for use with Nepenthes (tropical pitcher plants), it turns out this formulation works quite well with tropical orchids and paphiopedilums in particular. I’ve not had a chance to experiment around
too much with it, so I’m still looking for feedback as to its uses and utility.
Very good with Nepenthes, and quite good with paphs. May also work with strange temperate terrestrials, including some cyps. Note: We’ve been getting very good feedback about N1 for use with paphs.
This is a complete formulation with gelling agent, carbohydrate source, and organic and inorganic nitrogen sources. No activated charcoal. $6 per 1 liter pre-pack.

WCatt replate medium NEW!
The newest formulation from Western Labs- and the best stuff for halting undesirable proliferation in cattleyas and other genera including odontoglossums. This has gone from being our newest formulation to our most
popular.
Recommended for a broad spectrum of genera, including cymbidiums, odontoglossum intergenetics, cattleyas (including sophronitis), phalaenopsis, dendrobiums, and many others. We've received some great
feedback on this stuff. $6.50 per 1 liter pre-pack. BACK IN STOCK.

Malto-dextrin (media component)
Used at 5-15 grams per liter, malto-dextrin is a glucose polymer that adds carbohydrates without the osmotic impact of mono- and disaccharides. To be used in addition to other media components (salts, vitamins, etc.)
$2 per 50 gram pouch.
|
|
|
Banana powder (media component)
Used at 5-25 grams per liter, banana powder is just what it sounds like- freeze-dried bananas, ground into a fine powder. Not as useful for germination as it is for replate. May be used at ~5 grams/liter for mother
flask (as in our P669, above), but not recommended for paphs. To be used in addition to other media components (salts, vitamins, etc.) $5 per 50 gram pouch.

|
Iron EDDHA (media component)
EDTA is a good chelant for adding iron to plant tissue culture media, but EDDHA is better- more stable, and less phytotoxic. This product is sold as a bottle with the dry powder; add 250 mL of distilled water to
dissolve, and store in the refrigerator until used. This may be added to supplement the iron in prepared media (1-5 mL per liter of finished medium), or added as the entire iron source (10 mL per liter). $10 per
container (re-usable and autoclavable).

Western WCatt medium NEW!
The latest and greatest from Western labs. We’re still in the middle of trying it out ourselves, but customers are reporting spectacular success with plants that normally go bonkers on proliferation, producing firmer
individual seedlings instead. Rave reviews coming in! Excellent for cattleyas, dendrobiums, and oncidium alliance plants. Replate only- not for seed germination. US$6.50 per 1 liter pouch. Contains gelling agent.
