My Interests (The "Short" Version):

Volcanology & Pondering the Earth - I do actually enjoy doing and thinking about geology. I try to get some "field time" (what normal people would call a camping trip) every so often, to remind myself why I'm doing this, but it comes much more rarely than I would like. Check out the Cascades Volcano Observatory page for lots of great info and links for volcanology & education!! That's where I got these cool PIX of Medicine Lake Highlands (left; one of my M.S. thesis areas) and Mount St. Helens (right)!!

Teaching & Education - I thoroughly enjoy TEACHING, and combining that with the study of geology has really been great! I want to continue to teach at the College level - and I might eventually get my Ph.D. to teach at a university. We'll see... If you'd like to see what and where I'm currently teaching or access a link to other Educational Resources, check out my Teaching Page.

Movies - I enjoy going to all sorts of movies, except for horror. Some of my favorite movies are St. Elmo's Fire, Grand Canyon, Highlander (the FIRST one), Dead Poet's Society, and the Batman series. I've enjoyed some of the more recent sci-fi movies, like The Matrix, but I've not seen a lot of the most recent stuff, 'cause of time! My most recent and TOTAL addiction is the LORD OF THE RINGS movies! I especially like Aragorn (and the actor who plays him, Viggo Mortensen).

Television - David and I like to watch some mindless comedy sometimes, like Mad About You or Frasier, etc. We've been known to watch an episode or two of Southpark... Otherwise, this arena is dominated by Science Fiction. I don't really watch much TV, but when I do it consists of basically two shows: I *love* Babylon 5, and I was sad to see it finish its run. The Crusade off-shoot was good, but not AS good. My two favorite characters on the original B5 (one of which they KILLED OFF mind you - not that I'm bitter!) are [character names] Michael Garibaldi (top left) and Marcus Cole (bottom left). I also liked Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (unfortunately, their page is a pay page, so I'm not linked) while its was running. David and I also like to watch VCR episodes of ST:NG and Classic ST.

I absolutely LOVED John Doe while it was on the air - but that seems to have cursed it to obscurity. :(

FUN Reading - I really enjoy reading, and I sincerely wish I could make more time to do it. I have been focusing on magazines of late... just 'cause I can actually FINISH an article in the time I have! :) My favorite magazines are: Real Simple, Simple Scrapbooks, Creating Keepsakes, Memory Makers, and the occasionals Sunset or Better Homes and Gardens when I pick 'em up from the store. However, when I do get to read books, I like fantasy and historical fiction. Some of my favorite authors are Jean Auel, Madeline L'Engle (her young adult stuff and, among others - The Crosswicks Journals), Linda Lay Schuler (Voice of the Eagle series), and Mary Stewart (Crystal Cave series). I especially like historical fiction books and Arthurian legends.

Music - My taste in music is WIDELY varied. I'm into lots of genres...

From the Best of the 80s - Duran Duran, INXS, Depeche Mode, etc....
I was THRILLED to see the original 5 band members of Duran Duran in concert both in November 2003 (in Tucson, in a very small venue) and in February 2005 (in San Diego in a HUGE venue). They are still TRULY TRULY awesome. Their new album, Astronaut, is perfect for my mood of late - you have GOT to check it out!

From the 90s - Vertical Horizon, Savage Garden, and the like...

From the Best of the Best & Classic Rock - Rush, Yes, Eric Clapton...
to New Age - Tangerine Dream, David Lanz, Paul Speer...
to "Ethnic music" - Enya, Clannad, Loreena McKennitt....
And some "unclassifiable" bands like Trout Fishing in America!!
And this is only a partial list of what I like!
What I *don't* like is rap, grunge, 'n' "angry" 90s or '00 music.
I don't need any outside stimulus to get mad! :)

Artsy stuff - I like to do what I guess is sort of called graphic design - artistically coloring and shaping of words 'n' stuff like that (like on snail mail and the like). I have found a MAJOR ADDICTION for that talent in SCRAPBOOKING! It's become my artistic and theraputic outlet, and I have met many great friends through the hobby, both in-town and on-line!

A friend of mine also got me started on making a wish book full of photos of design ideas and creative ideas for home decorating. She's hoping to publish a "how to" book on the planning technique she's teaching me... so I'll keep you informed.

I have also done lots of different types of needlework like needlepoint, cross-stitch (counted, not stamped), crewel, and longstitch... but most of my hbby time of late has been spent on scrapbooking.

This list only scratches the surface! Keep checking back for changes and additions!
