Membership Cub Scouting members join a Cub Scout pack and are assigned to a den, usually a neighborhood group of six to eight boys. Tiger Cubs (first-graders), Wolf Cub Scouts (second-graders), Bear Cub Scouts (third-graders), and Webelos 1 & 2 Scouts (fourth- and fifth-graders) meet weekly throughout the school year, except the week we have a pack meeting. Once a month, all of the dens and family members gather for a pack meeting under the direction of our Cub Master and pack committee. Volunteer Leadership (We need your help desperately…) Thousands of volunteer leaders, both men and women, are involved in the Cub Scout program. They serve in a variety of positions, as everything from unit leaders to pack committee chairs, committee members, den leaders, and chartered organization representatives. We really need you to become involved with the pack for us to be successful. Anything you can do to help out from volunteering to be a committee member, heading up an event, or just helping out with our activities throughout the year is essential to a successful year of scouting. Please see the volunteer list at the registration table for jobs which we need help with. If you are interested in any of them, please sign up for any event on the list. Advancement Plan Recognition is important to young boys. The Cub Scouting advancement plan provides fun for the boys, gives them a sense of personal achievement as they earn badges, and strengthens family understanding as adult family members work with boys on advancement projects. It is very important that your work with your son on their achievements as they only have a limited amount of time to work on them in den meetings. What Does It Cost? Groups responsible for supporting Cub Scouting are the boys and their parents, the pack, the chartered organization, and the community. The boy must help pay his own way by paying the District registration fee, den dues, and the Pack activity fee (see below for amounts). We need these fees to help pay for all the events we do throughout the year, awards and patches, and the den activities. The below fees are due at school night. It is very important to remember that all of these fees as well as fees for camping trips, and other special events can all be paid by the boys participating in our three fund raising events we hold each year. Each boy will earn at least 50% of the profit on any fundraising efforts they do, and it will be directly deposited into their scout accounts. They can use this money to pay for any of the year’s activities (most of which are listed below), uniform needs, camping supplies directly related to Cub Scouting, or even to receive a credit of the Activity Fee and Den Dues. Registration: $15.00 (New scouts) $10.00 (Returning) payable to Gulf Coast Council Activity Fee: $50.00 – payable to Pack 52 Den Dues: $3.00 per month (payable directly to the den leaders) TOTAL DUE: $65 (New) $60.00 (Returning) This year they are requiring us to collect the registration fee on a separate check or in cash. Our pack does three fundraisers a year: District Popcorn Sale – A portion of the money goes to the district, but the remainder of the profit will be split between the boy’s scout account and the Pack. This financial support to the district provides leadership training, outdoor programs, council service centers and other facilities, and professional service for units as well as helping our pack with our activities. October Christmas Wreath Sale – Here we can make anywhere from $5-6 per item sold with 50% of that profit going directly into their scout accounts. Nov-Dec Pizza Kit Sales—Spring – There is a $5.00 per item profit and the boys will again earn 50% of that into their scout accounts. March It is easy to see that by selling only a few items in each one of these fundraisers or by really concentrating on one of them, it should be very easy for the boys to pay for their entire year of scouting. Uniforms/Books (approx $65.00 for basic uniform and book) There are only a few pieces of the uniform that you must have, others are optional. Most of our boys do not buy the pants or socks and they typically wear jeans or shorts with their uniform. Uniform includes: (this is now true for Tiger Cubs as well) 1. Shirt (Blue Cub Scout shirt can be used for entire Cub Scouting years or WEBELOS may purchase tan shirt and continue to use when they enter Boy Scouts) ~$22.95 2. Cap – Rank appropriate hat (i.e. Tiger, Wolf, Bear, WEBELO 1&2) - ~$11.80 3. Belt/Buckle – Should really get this as they will be earning belt loops to display on it. Belt loops will not fit on WEBELO belt so just get blue Cub Scout belt. ~$9.50 4. Neckerchief – Rank Appropriate ~$4.90 5. Neckerchief Slide – Rank appropriate ~$2.30 6. Patches – Uniform comes with American Flag, need to purchase Gulf Coast Council patch ~$3.20, Pack 52 numbers (5 & 2) ~$1.80, den number (see below) ~$1.40, and Cub Scout World Crest emblem 1.50. The Pack will provide Quality Unit, 50 Year service strip, WEBELO patrol patch, and all achievement patches, achievement segments, pins, belt loops, beads, and arrow points earned throughout the year. 7. Achievement Book – rank appropriate ~$5.30 Note: After their first year with the Pack, we provide their next year’s neckerchief, slide and books at graduation. Den 2 – Tigers Den 4 – Wolves Den 1 – Bears Den 3 – WEBELOS 1 Den 10 – WEBELOS 2 Optional Uniform items 1. “Brag” Vest – This is optional, but most of our boys wear them to pack meetings. It is a place to put all their participation patches and segments which are provided by the Pack. You can purchase it from any of the uniform locations, but they are red felt and not the easiest to sew on. Our pack makes our own out of cotton/polyester and they will be available at pack meetings for ~$8.00. 2. Pack t-shirts will also be available at pack meetings for use on more casual pack events like camp-outs etc… ~$10.00 You can buy the uniform and a lot of other stuff from the following locations: 1. On-line – www.scoutstuff.org 2. Fort Walton Beach – Toy Magic (across from FWB post Office) 3. Pensacola – Trading Post (see www.gulfcoastcouncil.org/shop/index.html) Planned Activities For The Year (costs are approximate and are per person) Pack 52 Camping Overnight Fall – Canoe Trip at Blackwater ~ $15.00-$20.00 Scout Fun Day - $2.00 WEBELOS Weekend - $6.00 (WEBELOS Only 4th & 5th grades) Niceville Christmas Parade - Free District Ice Pilots Game - $20.00 per person Pinewood Derby - Free USS Alabama Overnight - $20.00 per person (males only) Blue & Gold Banquet - $5.00 per person Pack 52 Spring Camping – Gunter Maxwell – $5.00 per person Zoo Snooze Overnight or Marianna Caverns- $20.00 per person Scout-A-Rama - $2.00 per person District Family Camp Overnight – Spring - $10.00 per person If your son wants to participate in all of the possible activities for the year it could cost ~ $100.00 plus the cost of other family members that participate. It is very important to have them participate in the fundraising events so they can offset their costs for the scouting year. Any questions that you might have about our program, please feel free to call our Cub Master, Dr. Craig Ewing at 678-7539. We are looking forward to another exciting Scouting Year! |

Pack 52 has been carrying on the fine traditions of Cub Scouting for over 50 years. We serve the Niceville and Valparaiso areas (Edge & Valparaiso Elementary Schools). Below is some important information to help you in planning for an exciting year of scouting with Pack 52. It covers the basic info you need for your child to get started. Much more information will be made available to you from your individual Den Leaders once we get started. What Is Cub Scouts? Since 1930, the Boy Scouts of America has helped younger boys through Cub Scouting. It is a year-round family program designed for boys who are in the first grade through fifth grade (or 7, 8, 9, and 10 years of age). Parents, leaders, and organizations work together to achieve the purposes of Cub Scouting. Currently, Cub Scouting is the largest of the BSA's three membership divisions. (The others are Boy Scouting and Venturing.) |
