Welcome Back!
The Paloma PTA Executive Board welcomes you and your students back to school. We have plenty of events and activities planned for you this year. Here are some highlights. Be sure to mark your calendars now so you don't miss the fun.
Ice Cream Social, Friday, September 22
It's the anniversary of the 1st ice cream cone and
we'll welcome you back to school with plenty of ice cream, door prizes, and
games for the kids. It's a great opportunity to socialize with teachers, staff,
and other parents and enjoy some yummy dessert.
Bikes and Blades Safety Day, Saturday, October 14
State Farm Insurance returns as our sponsor for this day of
safety tips and obstacle course bike riding and roller blading.
Holiday Boutique, Saturday, November 18
Paloma parents and local crafters offer tempting hand-made gifts
and treats. Maybe Santa will return this year, too!
Garage Sale, Saturday, February 10
Donate your old but useful stuff, and buy someone else's. It's a
great incentive to clean out those closets!
Proceeds go to the Teacher Wish List Fund.
Spring Carnival, Saturday, March 24
Dunk a teacher, ring a golf club, bounce in a moonwalk, or get
your face painted. It's all part of this annual spring collection of games,
crafts, food, music, and more. We're holding it earlier this year in hopes of
cooler weather.
Special Dinner and Silent Auction, Friday, April 27
Enjoy a relaxing dinner while you bid for various tempting
packages put together by our hard-working Donations Committee. This is a new
event and we're looking forward to a great turnout.
Won't you join us?
New Focus
Fundraising has always been an important part of your PTA's year. After all, we can't pay the playground supervisors, fulfill the teachers' wish list, or build shade structures if we don't have the funds. But there is another side to the PTA: service. This year, the PTA will focus strongly on our service role. Here's how.
Service to Teachers
We will continue all our teacher appreciation activities,
including gifts, meals, and Teacher Appreciation Week. In addition, we will
refurbish the teacher's lounge with some fresh paint and furnishings. Do you
have a gently-used refrigerator, couch, or silk plants you could donate toward
this cause?
Service to Parents
Our new Legislative and School Board Liaisons will keep parents
better informed about educational policy and funding decisions. Our new
parenting workshops will offer advice and support in a variety of areas.
The new PTA Handbook will go home the 1st week of class. It provides
information about your PTA and a calendar of events, plus some volunteering
sign-up sheets. Our upgraded web site provides additional information and links
to other useful sites. Check us out at
www.palomapta.org!
Service to Students
Most of what we do provides a service to our students. New this
year are Paloma school supplies for sale, funding for the artist-in-residence
program, the Reflections Arts Recognition Program, and a new cool Paloma
t-shirt for sale.

Soar! Legislative Corner by Dianne Sposito (753.5610 or
I am the PTA's Legislative Liaison. Last year, we formed a new Paloma PTA legislative group. Our goal is to monitor legislative activities related to public education by attending committee meetings, sessions, rallies, and other public events, and to educate the Paloma community about these issues.
This summer our small group of dedicated Paloma parents actively took part in rallies, wrote letters, and made phone calls to the Arizona state legislature as our elected officials debated how to increase funding for public education. During their special session, the legislature passed the Education 2000 plan, which now goes before the voters on November 7th as Proposition 301.
The Arizona Education Association reports that in 1999 Arizona ranked 50th in the U.S. for spending per child in education, 4th for largest class sizes, and 2nd for highest dropout rates. Arizona teachers ranked 38th in the nation on salary levels, yet the state fell somewhere between 7th and 12th on administrative costs. Proposition 301 seeks to redress these alarming statistics.
If approved, Proposition 301 will raise the statewide sales tax by 6/10th of 1%. This amounts to only an extra 6 cents on a $10 purchase. Roughly 85% of the revenues generated are dedicated to grades K-12, including an increase in state spending of $350 per pupil.
The money raised will go directly to the classroom, with 20% dedicated to a base pay increase for teachers and another 40% slated for performance-based teacher pay increases. The remaining 40% will pay for reducing class sizes, AIMS intervention, and dropout prevention.
According to the Arizona PTA, Proposition 301 will address the needs of Arizona's children by providing funds specifically for:
Your Paloma PTA joins the Arizona PTA in strongly supporting Proposition 301. This could be the single most important vote on education funding in this state this decade.
We will continue to provide details about Proposition 301 and other education-related legislation in this newsletter and on our web site. In addition, I am looking to increase participation in our new PTA legislative group with volunteers willing to get involved in matters that directly affect the education of our children. Just send me your phone number and/or e-mail and I'll be in touch. Won't you join us?
