38. HENRY 27 NEWBERRY (Henry 26 (19), Gen. Roger 25, Capt. Roger 24, Capt. Benjamin 23, Maj. Benjamin 22, Thomas 21), born in Windsor, Conn., 29 June 1817, when seven years old was taken by his parents in their removal to Cuyahoga Falls, O., where he was reared and educated and in early manhood was a merchant. Later he was interested in manufacturing in Cleveland, O., and died 22 Dec. 1875, aged fifty-eight years.

He married first, at Canton, O., 28 Nov, 1838, Mary Belden, born 19 Sept. 1819, died in Cleveland, O., 30 Jan. 1869. Three children.

He married second, at Cleveland, 0., 10 May 1870, Cornelia Jane Blair, born there 5 May 1842, daughter of Henry E. and Eliza Ann (Meach) Blair. No issue.

34. AMASA STOUGHTON 27 NEWBERRY (Capt. Amasa 26 (17), Benjamin 25, Sergt. Joseph 24, Thomas 23, Maj. Benjamin 22, Thomas 21), born in East (now South) Windsor, Conn., 15 Jan. 1802, when a child was taken by his parents in their removal in 1805 to Sangerfield, Oneida County, N.Y., where he resided the remainder of his life, inheriting the homestead his parents had acquired there.

Mr. Newberry was a progressive, scientific, and prosperous farmer and stock-breeder, and a successful business man; was vice-president and director of a bank, president of the New York State Agricultural Society, and president of the Oneida County Agricultural Society; and he held the public offices of United States District Loan Commissioner and member of the New York State Assembly. He died 15 Apr. 1858, having sustained throughout his career a high reputation for integrity and exemplary mode of life.

He married 15 Jan. 1829, Cornelia Perry Pangborn, a relative of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry.
Children born in Sangerfield, N.Y.:
i. Edwin Walter 28, b. 28 Oct. 1829, d. 20 Feb. 1832.
ii. Maj. Oliver Penny, b. 8 May 1831, had an exciting and strenuous career in life. When a youth he was one of the pioneers in the rush to the California gold mines in 1849, where he engaged in prospecting for about three years. In 1852-3 he was a captain in Gen. Walker's filibustering expedition against the province of Sonora, Mexico, and during an engagement was wounded and left as dead on the field, but later managed to find his way back to a United States fort on the frontier; and after recovering from his hardships he was employed for about two years as a guide in Sonora. In 1855 he returned to the United States, soon located in Cameron, Mo., and for the next five years was engaged in civil engineering, principally in the construction of the Hannibal and St. Joseph R.R. At the outbreak of the Civil War he joined Gen. Lyon's Union forces in Missouri and was taken prisoner at Springfield, Mo., but quickly escaped. He was soon commissioned captain of the Twenty-fourth Missouri Volunteers and took part in several engagements including the battle of Shiloh where he was severely wounded; later he was promoted to major of the Fifth Missouri Cavalry, and rendered arduous and protracted service until the close of the war in 1865. Maj. Newberry was a man of adventurous spirit and daring bravery, had a gallant and honorable career as a soldier, and d. 17 June 1874, at the early age of forty-three years, from the results of hardships, exposure. and wounds in his protracted military service.
