Do We need a government? ( Discuss-Explore Anarchy). Why are governments established?

Yes we do need government. If we didn't have a government, the people would be lost and confused and anarchy would rule the land. If that were to happen, everyone would be for themselves and public safety not exist. Government was established to keep this from happening. Governments, keep the peace and protect the people from domestic and foreign invaders.

Explaining American Government of Confused

Dear Confused Person,

I have heard that you are unfamiliar with the US and its government. I will be happy to respond and tell you about our Congress. First, the US government is a bicameralism. That is, a legislature made up of two houses, a Senate and House of Representatives. Each State has equal representation in the Senate and representation of population in the House of Representatives. Next to understand is the term of each position. People in Congress are in one position for 2 years only. On top of that, there are two sessions or a period of time when the legislative body conducts business. A special session occurs when the President calls a meeting to deal with a pressing issue. These are few and are not regular. When making laws, the Congress is responsible for creating it. A law is a given to the Congress and they must approve the law with a majority vote. If the law is passed, it goes to the President to approve or veto. If vetoed, the Congress can rewrite the law or let it die. Our government system is called Representative Democracy. This means that a small group of people chosen by the people will act as their mediator to the government. Thus, the House of Representatives are elected by the people and we tell them what we want done. I hope this makes you less confused.

From,
Paul Cock

If you were one of the early colonist, name 3 important laws which you would base your government on?

I would base the government on security, protection and justice. All of them are important because if your government didn't do any of this, it would be anarchy. It is also important to know that if you are convicted of a crime, you will have a jury and a, hopefully, fair trial. Therefore, those are the 3 most important laws I would want to be in my government.

Pretend you are a signer of the Declaration of Independence. When it's published you may be executed. Others will die in defending its ideas. What are you thinking as you sign?

I would be thinking about my family, my life and what happens if the British find me. Personally, I wouldn't sign it because that is like signing a warrant for your arrest. Sure, we want freedom but I don't want to die because the King doesn't like my ideas.

Does a strong central government automatically take away individual freedom? Why or why not.

No it doesn't. If the people were to give up their individual freedom, then the government would take it away. As long as a person is true to their freedom and ready to defend themselves against the government, freedom would not be taken away.

What is an anti-federalist and what is a federalist?

A federalist is person who supported the adopting of the Constitution. Some federalists include names like John Hancock and James Madison. These men stressed the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation.

An anti-federalist is a person who opposes the adopting of the Constitution. They attacked every part of a new document. Some objectives were to absence many mention of God, to deny the States power to printing money and Framers’ proposals.

List the kinds of skills and characteristics their/ your ideal representatives would have.

My representative would have skills like listening and doing what the people ask. Every month, he would poll the people to hear what arguments or concerns they had. After hearing the people, he would make a proposal and present it to the people. If the people agree, the representative will take it to Congress and argue his point until it is passed. Of course this is unrealistic but if the representatives did this, there would be more of a relationship between the people and the government.

Describe in a couple of paragraphs how this document will impact the concept of equality in the future governments of England.

This document impacted England by setting laws for the dictator. When King John signed the Magna Carta, he signed over all his power to the Parliament. When looking through the Magna Carta, you can see that fair trials and freedom to have rights. This what our American government was based on and the English were the first to create it. Therefore, England set up how the American Constitution would be written and how the government of England would be ruled until the end of World War II.

What are the similarities of the President and Governor?

Some of the similarities of the president and governor is the way with crime. Both can short a sentence, let a criminal go free or prolong the execution. Another similarity is that both the president and the governor must be impeached to lose there office. The final similarity is to veto bills passed by the legislature.
