The Concept

A few years ago, during one of the ticket-buying frenzies around some huge lottery jackpot, I imagined opening my mailbox and finding an envelope with the winning ticket inside.

Since I didn't know anyone who would be sending me a ticket, it would probably have to be addressed to someone else and misdelivered to my house. We get the wrong mail all the time. But, would I get caught?

See, I had a friend in California (Hi, Joe!) buy me a ticket for one of those huge drawings once, and he scanned in the ticket and e-mailed it to me. When I play the Florida lottery, I play the same numbers every time, so I'd know if my numbers came up. If I waited a few days, I could find out the name and location of the store where the ticket was sold, but what if they had security cameras in there and could prove who bought the ticket? I could go to prison! On the other hand, you hear all the time about lesser jackpots that never get claimed. Maybe they stuck that quick-pick in an envelope and mailed it without really looking at the numbers. They'd never know that hundreds of millions of dollars just slipped through their fingers.

As you can tell, I put a lot of thought into this. In fact, in November of 2004, I started writing a script called "The Big Payoff" and talked to my friend James Roy about shooting the film, using his pro-quality video camera and gear. But I never finished writing it.
