One of the things a Dachshund was originally used for was to "go to ground", tracking a badger (and other pests and game) into it's lair. 

Earthdog Trials are designed to test this trait by timing the dog as it moves through a pre-constructed tunnel, and by it's willingness to "work" the game (bark, dig, and generally raise a ruckus) at the far end.  The game used in an Earthdog Trial is normally a large rat -- CAGED.  This is a test of instinct, not a blood-sport!
