An Ode to Kirby Smith

Here's to Kirby, so full of grace
So fleet of foot, so sweet of face
Who with a twinkle in his eye
Would chase the birds into the sky

He was not mine and yet I know
He loved me for this he did show
He was beloved by oh so many
By Harmon, Scout, Becky and Winnie

He marched so bravely to his fate
He never blamed, he could not hate
It is so hard for us he left
But he would not want us so bereft

He would tell us not to mourn too long
He loved his life, it would be wrong
He would want us all to celebrate
His wonderful life, so fine a mate

We can find solace in each other
He was more than a dog, like no other
He knows we'll be together soon
And play among the stars and moon

For when we enter Heaven's gate
He'll be there waiting, won't that be great?
His tail will be wagging as fast as it can
We shall always love our little man

We got Kirby in July, 1999. He weighed 2 1/2 pounds.
We had a family portrait taken on a very windy day in December, 2004.
Kirby spent most of his evenings cuddled up to Pete.
At Jim's house in Phoenix. I am holding Kirby and our son, Jim's Maltese, Harmon. Our son is holding his cat, Scout. Cindy's dog, Winnie is coming around the couch.
Cindy, Kirby and I are relaxing at her house in California, after Thanksgiving dinner, 2004.
Kirby and Cindy's dog, Winnie, they were best pals.
Kirby beside a porcupine cactus on our property, 2002.
Pete with Kirby and Jim and his wife, Diane with Harmon. Ready to take a charity walk for a local Animal Welfare league. We took plenty of water, it was hot for October. Harmon is one month younger then Kirby.
In Florida, with our daughter's dog, Becky.
The last picture of Kirby. Our son, Mike came up with his Golden, Tasha. Kirby died 3 days later.
