BACKGROUND:

The State of Florida, "Stop Burn Injuries" program was enacted by a Resolution signed by Governor Bob Graham and passed by the Florida State Legislature on 18 January 1983. In part, the Resolution, "encourages the 67 School Districts to realize the critical need for ongoing fire and burn education". Local Fire Departments adequately cover fire safety; Colonel Straub's lectures cover burn safety and treatment -- the other half of the equation! His lectures have been praised by the State of Florida, Treasurer, who is also the State Fire Marshal, as well as by each Governor since inception of the program.

CONTENT:

Colonel Straub's lectures touch on the major causes of burns in the home and in industry. Adjusting his lectures to various lengths by using films to aid his presentations, he accommodates students from elementary school to the university level, as well as civic, church and industrial organizations. He has gained his expertise by spending time as a guest staff member at the Shrine Burn Hospitals in Cincinnati, Ohio and Galveston, Texas. In addition, he has spent time as a guest staff member at the University of South Alabama Burn Unit, Mobile, Alabama. His lectures have been endorsed by Dr. Arnold Luterman, Director of the University of South Alabama Burn Unit.

Lectures to Middle School, High School, College and University levels range from the basic physics and chemistry of fire to the physiology of burns and their treatment. His lectures are sprinkled with true stores of young people who have been burned and the difficulties they experienced returning to their peer group. He is particularly knowledgeable regarding the new and specialized treatment using artificial skin which was partly developed at the Shrine Burn Hospital for Children in Boston.

The larger the gathering the better! He has lectured as few as ten or twelve adult medical technicians in training to as many as 1200 to 1300 Senior High School students in their gymnasium or auditorium. Lectures to 200 or 300 Elementary school students are common. Lectures to 900 or 1000 Senior High school students are the rule.

Holding their attention for a full 45 to 50 minute lecture is never a problem. A common comment from students is that they have, "gained a great deal of new knowledge about something they really hadn't thought very much about". He made them think! Faculty members are encouraged to attend his lectures.
