BACKGROUND:

This program is an off-shoot of programs which are presented at Youth Leadership Conferences throughout the Nation and in many areas by the National Sojourners. Colonel Straub became interested in developing the program in 1993 to help the youth of our nation understand why our forefathers took pride and revered our national emblem -- "the flag of our nation". Additionally, he studied the difficulty citizens were having at their naturalization ceremonies understanding the history and evolution of our National Colors. Colonel Straub has added some new wrinkles including wearing an authentic reproduction of a Revolutionary War Navy Commodore's Uniform -- tricorn hat, white britches, tailed coat with lots of brass buttons, white stockings and authentic switchable shoes of the 1700's. The program has been taped and in the Okaloosa, Florida county school system for distribution to all Senior High Schools and is of particular interest to patriotic and veteran organizations, and Boy Scouts of America Troops.

CONTENT:

He starts the program with the audience joining in saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of our Country. After hearing it, usually spoken incorrectly, he punctuates the Pledge as he heard it and then challenges the audience to punctuate and say it properly. "Sometimes, they have as many as 8 commas in it before we start working it to the point it can be said properly".

A member of the audience or teacher joins him for the second part of the program -- The Building of the Flag. Using a magnet board with red, white, and blue magnetized strips, the program tracks the evolution of the flag throughout our history by adding a stripe and star as the Territories were admitted to the Union. When the flag increased to 15 stripes and 15 stars, they are added. When Congress reduced the flag back to 13 stripes, the extra stripes are removed. Finally, in all its' glory, the Stars and Stripes is finished leading to the third part of the program.

The third part of the program is an updated version of the great piece written in the early 1900's by Amos Hurley called "Old Glory Speaks". This stirring soliloquy traces the travels of our flag from its early days to its being unfurled on the moon and leaves all in earshot with the feeling of belonging to the greatest Republic on earth. The third section of this presentation is an integral part of The Military Order annual Massing of Colors held at the Eglin AFB Armament Museum each year.
