The remodeling of the
N&W passenger station required the removal of all of the old
porches, ramps and stairwells from the rear of the building.

Looking west on Franklin
Road you see the YWCA in the foreground at left, Lee Jr. High a
little further along, the Cadillac LaSalle dealership on the right
and an interesting round building at the present site of the
telephone company across from First Baptist Church.

On September 5, 1906 a
trolley carrying over 100 people riding from Vinton to Roanoke for
Circus Day, had the unpleasant experience of having the bridge
crossing Tinker Creek drop out from under them. The 15 foot drop
claimed the life of one man, and seriously injured five others.
