The N&W Railway offices being destroyed by fire.
November 22, 1915. The
Philip-Levy tobacco warehouse at Salem Avenue and Roanoke Street
begins to burn.

The pump equipment of
the day couldn't contain the fire.

The crowds watched as
the building was totally destroyed, to the tune of $10,000. (In 1915
dollars)

As large as the Levy
warehouse fire was, Roanoke's most spectacular blaze was in 1898 when
the Hotel Roanoke caught fire. Note the linens and furnishings
brought onto the lawn by employees attempting to save what could be
saved.
