The Downtowner Motor Inn
was built directly across from the Patrick Henry Hotel in the mid
sixties. The chain's specialty was locating motels in urban settings.

Scottie's Restaurant was
a landmark on Williamson Road. It would later became Scottie's
Bar-B-Que.

The Hotel Lenox (1920s)
stood at the corner of Jefferson Street and Norfolk Avenue at the
rail crossing. Previously it had been christened the St. James, and
before that the Continental Hotel. The steps led to a pedestrian
overpass. The site is now occupied by the Wachovia Tower.

Lee Jr. High School.
Today the Poff Federal Building stands on these grounds. (1943)

The Stratford Hotel and its annex were located across Jefferson Street from the Hotel Roanoke on the spot where Norfolk & Western would eventually build its new General Office building. (1930)
