This colorful building at Church and First was a bright beacon for First Federal Savings & Loan, but today is muted in mirrored glass. The art deco of Appalachian Power Company is seen on the hill behind. (1956)


Another of Roanoke Railway & Electric's streetcars, #42 makes its way down Ninth Street S.E., to the American Viscose plant entrance. The other end of this streetcar route can be seen on page 81.


The Fairland Lake Club was located near present day 581 opposite Valley View Mall. The remains of the lake can still be seen off of Lakeview Dr. and Fairland Rd.
