Down Payment Assistance Program adopted by Tempe City Council

TEMPE, Ariz. - Tempe residents struggling to get out of rental housing can
now apply to the city for help in making the down payment necessary to buy a
home.

In August, the Tempe City Council - acting as the Tempe Housing Authority
Governing Board - adopted the Homeownership Down Payment Assistance Program.

The Section 8 Home Ownership Program, administered by the Housing Services
Division, will give eligible participants in the Section 8 Housing Choice
Voucher Program the option of purchasing a home. The program permits a
family to use a federal grant toward the down payment of a home.

"I am excited for the Tempe residents who can now apply for this
assistance," said Mayor Hugh Hallman. "Home ownership is something most
Americans dream about and now, thanks to these grant programs, more of our
city's residents can realize that dream."

In addition, applicants may be eligible to participate in American Dream
Down Payment Initiative (ADDI), Community Assisted Mortgage Program (CAMP),
Individual Development Account (IDA) and/or Individual Development and
Empowerment Account (I.D.E.A.) down payment assistance grants if funds are
available. Applicants must qualify for these funds at the point a home
purchase agreement is executed and approved by the Housing Services
Division.

The program does not use City of Tempe money. It is funded through grants
and Section 8 Housing Assistance funds.
