Reuse-A-Shoe program to support youth sports in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. - Not sure what to do with those old sneakers? The city of
Tempe is partnering with Arizona State University (ASU) and Nike, Inc. to
collect 5,000 pairs of shoes and recycle them into sports surfaces as part
of the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Program. The Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Program collects and
recycles all brands of athletic shoes as well as byproducts from the
manufacturing of outsoles, into a material that is used in sports surfaces
like soccer and football fields, basketball & tennis courts and tracks.

"Tempe is excited to be a part of this creative program that promotes youth
sports and good recycling habits," Councilmember Ben Arredondo said. "This
program is a great way for the community to partner together to accomplish a
shared goal that supports the community."

Nike donates these surfaces to communities participating in the program as
part of their commitment to get kids involved in youth sports and learn the
benefits of recycling. The city hopes to put a sports surface in Tempe. ASU
coordinated the first collection on Earth Day, April 22 and will continue to
collect shoes on campus. For more information visit
