Borders bookstore announcing their Educator Appreciation Weekend October 8-10.
They’re offering 25% of all books, 15% off all DVD’s, and 40% off café purchases (we must keep well nourished as we shop) for current and retired educators. They’re also having raffles and give-aways of other goodies. They had a similar event last spring and I got a great canvas bag, a board book for Erin, a great timeline poster, and of course some stuff we homeschoolers have no need for…but they were free!
If you haven’t already signed up as an educator through Borders Bookstore, the form is quick and easy to complete; just stop by the customer assistance desk (not the check-out) for a form. If you like getting coupons the rest of the time, be sure to include your email address; they email “25% off any one book” coupons about every other week.

Phoenix Arizona Ranked Second Best City Government Web Site
Best City and County Government Web Sites Named
Rhonda Wilson, September 2004
The nation's most innovative and robust city and county government Web sites have been named by the Center for Digital Government in its 2004 Best of the Web contest, an annual competition attracting hundreds of entries each year.
Capturing first place in the city portal category is Fort Collins, Colo. followed by Phoenix, Ariz., New York City, Chicago and New Orleans -- fourth-place tie, and Dallas.
The top-five winners in the county portal category are Miami-Dade County, Fla., Santa Clara County, Calif., Fulton County, Ga., King County, Wash., and San Diego County, Calif.
In its ninth year, the Best of the Web grades state, city, county and education Web sites on innovation, Web-based delivery of public services, efficiency, economy, and functionality for improved citizen access. Results from the state portal category were released last week. The state Digital Government Achievement Awards and education winners will be announced next week.
Customer service has always been the primary focus for city employees in their development and maintenance of the Fort Collins portal.
"The city's focus on top-level customer service is reflected through the many functions of our portal -- from e-commerce and virtual tours of our natural areas to search and access of official city documents," said Mayor Ray Martinez. "In times of economic challenges, we're trying to do business smarter, and fcgov.com is the perfect tool to continue to provide a high level of service to our customers, while maintaining costs. I extend hearty congratulations to city employees for earning this well-deserved award."
Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas said the county's first-place win is a testament to the hard work and dedication put forth by his staff.
"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Judy Zito, our chief information officer, for her exceptional leadership and guidance, ensuring that the idea of providing county services without boundaries became a reality," said Mayor Penelas.
The Center's executive director and one of contest judges, Cathilea Robinett, believes city and county government Web sites outdid themselves this year.
"Clearly, local government leaders have invested a lot of time and resources into building these fabulous sites for the sake of their citizens," she said. "My hat's off to all of these local jurisdictions for making the citizen-to-government experience a pleasant one."
The Center for Digital Government will open its 10th annual Best of the Web contest in April 2005. For more information on the contest or the Center for Digital Government, contact Rhonda Wilson, communications director, at 916/932-1321 or rwilson@centerdigitalgov.com. www.centerdigitalgov.com.

As U.S. expansion continues, IKEA hot on Tempe, AZ; Applauds city approval of first store in desert southwest.
Swedish Company’s U.S. Expansion Includes Opening the Doors of IKEA Tempe in Fall 2004
Contact:Joseph Roth 610-834-0180,x6500
PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA – IKEA, the world’s leading home furnishings retailer, today expressed appreciation to the Tempe [AZ] City Council, for the body’s approval last night of the first IKEA store in the Greater Phoenix area, and all of Arizona. Pending other city permits, construction could begin next month with an anticipated opening date of Fall 2004. When the doors of IKEA Tempe open, the store will be the first southwestern IKEA store and restaurant destination outside of Southern California.
“IKEA is thrilled and honored at the support voiced by the Tempe City Council in favor of opening a store in the Valley next year,” said Doug Greenholz, real estate manager for IKEA. “While we already knew that many Arizonans were fans of IKEA, the outpouring of interest since we announced our plans – plus this approval by the City – has truly made us feel most welcome. The professionalism of City officials and staff confirmed for IKEA that ‘Tempe is the smart place to be.’”
The plan approved 6-0 by the unanimous City Council on Thursday night allows for IKEA to build a 342,000 square foot IKEA store and restaurant at-grade with approximately 1300 parking spaces in front of, and alongside, the store. Having now secured the key city approval, IKEA will close on the purchase of the 23-acre site at the northeast corner of I-10 and Warner Road from Emerald Holdings. IKEA Tempe will be the Swedish retailer’s 22nd store in the U.S., and will reflect the unique architectural design for which IKEA stores are known worldwide.
In addition to offering nearly 10,000 exclusively designed items, IKEA Tempe will feature 50 different room settings, five model homes, a supervised children’s play area, as well as a 300-seat restaurant that serves Swedish specialties such as meatballs with lingonberries and salmon platters. Other family-friendly features will include Children’s IKEA showroom, baby care rooms, preferred parking and play areas throughout the store.
Greenholz continued, “We are glad to help fulfill Tempe’s vision for a home furnishings and lifestyle destination at Emerald Center. But, beyond the significant jobs and tax revenue we will generate, we are pleased the City recognizes the IKEA commitment to become an active member in this community.”
IKEA currently has more than 185 stores in 31 countries, including 18 stores in the United States and 11 stores in Canada. This January, the company began a North American expansion effort focused on 5 new stores a year for the next ten years, strengthening the presence of IKEA in existing markets while also slowly entering newer markets, such as the Valley of the Sun. Other U.S. stores planned include: Bloomington, MN; Dublin, CA; New Haven, CT; Philadelphia, PA; Somerville, MA; and a relocation in Houston, TX.
Since its founding in 1943, IKEA has offered a wide range of home furnishings and accessories of good design and function, at low prices so the majority of the people can afford them. IKEA is recognized as a socially responsible company, and continuously supports initiatives that benefit causes such as children and the environment. Site59 Launches New Search Engine ``The 59th-Minute Dash''; Search Less and Find More
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22, 2004--Site59, the leading seller of deeply discounted last-minute travel packages online, writes a new page in travel history with today's launch of the 59th-Minute Dash: a powerfully fast new search engine and results page that deliver the power of 50 searches in one. The new engine gives consumers maximum choice and flexibility whether they know their exact travel dates and destination or they are open-minded in their planning.
To provide consumers the "personal touch" often associated with the advice of an expert, this new search engine uses Site59's unique library of last-minute package inventory and patent-pending functionality unrivaled in online travel.
When consumers search by date and destination, Site59 works like a personal shopper -- not only returning the requested results, but also including relevant alternatives displayed in a new dashboard view. Alternatives include: other dates for the chosen destination, nearby and regional destinations for the chosen dates, and other relevant destinations for the chosen dates based on matching categories such as "Beach," "Big City," and "Golf." All options are shown with easy-to-compare pricing including taxes from the consumer's departure city, eliminating the inconvenient multiple searches and back-clicking that travelers must endure on other sites to save a buck or find what they want.
"Now travelers can see in a glance if staying an extra night will save them money, or if choosing another date or destination will offer them a better value," said Robert Albert, General Manager of Site59, a Travelocity Company.
Does Adding Two Nights in Bermuda and Saving $22 Sound Right?
A recent search on Site59 for the weekend of September 24th showed that New York City to Bermuda Friday to Sunday cost $606 per person for flight + hotel. With the new results page, consumers could easily see that they could save $22 per person by adding two nights and staying until Tuesday -- for a total of $584 per person. Prices for the same trip were also available for other dates. Further down the dashboard, six other Caribbean trips were listed from Nassau to Aruba priced $442-$571, followed by other domestic beach trips, starting at $334 -- all for the same dates.
Travelers Who Don't Know Can Still Go
Unlike other travel sites, Site59 doesn't require that travelers know where and when they want to go before showing the deals. The new search engine offers the incomparable flexibility of responding to open-ended requests such as "Europe this weekend" or "See all destinations this Friday-Sunday" so travelers can plan their trips with as much or as little information as they have decided. After choosing their departure city, consumers can choose to search by weekend or region, or refine their search by destination or specific date.
"Site59 has again revolutionized the travel shopping experience, making it easy for travelers to get away as often as they like," said Albert, "When planning a quick getaway, sometimes destination is important, but often travelers are just looking to get a great deal on 'anywhere but here' this weekend."
Site59 Last-Minute Getaways include flight + hotel (and optional car), flight + car and hotel + car, and they are available to hundreds of domestic and international destinations, from more than 100 U.S. cities, every day. Bookings can be made from 14 days in advance up to three hours before departure. Site59 is the only deeply discounted travel site that ensures consumers can choose their exact hotel, airline flights, and rental cars and earn frequent flier mile Last Minute Travel - Air travel - Cruise travel - Discount Travel - Travel Search Site News

Tempe asks residents to reduce over seeding this year

the seeding of winter rye grass and encouraging its residents to do the

Homeowners can reduce maintenance costs, lower water bills and save water by
cutting back on or eliminating winter grass seeding. Last year, during the
winter months, Tempe reduced its single-family residential water use by 10
percent.

Down Payment Assistance Program adopted by Tempe City Council
TEMPE, Ariz. - Tempe residents struggling to get out of rental housing can
now apply to the city for help in making the down payment necessary to buy a
home.
In August, the Tempe City Council - acting as the Tempe Housing Authority
Governing Board - adopted the Homeownership Down Payment Assistance Program.
The Section 8 Home Ownership Program, administered by the Housing Services
Division, will give eligible participants in the Section 8 Housing Choice
Voucher Program the option of purchasing a home. The program permits a
family to use a federal grant toward the down payment of a home.
"I am excited for the Tempe residents who can now apply for this
assistance," said Mayor Hugh Hallman. "Home ownership is something most
Americans dream about and now, thanks to these grant programs, more of our
city's residents can realize that dream."
In addition, applicants may be eligible to participate in American Dream
Down Payment Initiative (ADDI), Community Assisted Mortgage Program (CAMP),
Individual Development Account (IDA) and/or Individual Development and
Empowerment Account (I.D.E.A.) down payment assistance grants if funds are
available. Applicants must qualify for these funds at the point a home
purchase agreement is executed and approved by the Housing Services
Division.

$8 Million 'BioTeach' Campaign to Equip All MA Public High Schools with Lab Equipment and Biotech Teacher Training by 2010
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The Massachusetts Biotechnology Council (MBC) through the Massachusetts Biotechnology Education Foundation (MassBioEd) today announced the official launch of its BioTeach campaign. The campaign kicks off today at Brighton High School with the presentation of a $1.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. This grant will aid MassBioEd in its goal of providing Massachusetts high school students with biotechnology lab experience by offering school equipment and ongoing supplies, teacher training and career development activities. BioTeach seeks to make this offer to all 366 public high schools in Massachusetts over the next six years.
"Biotech jobs are a source of strength for our Massachusetts economy. Our administration has created new incentives to encourage the industry to grow and expand here, and now we are going to engage and motivate our young people to get the training they need to fill these good-paying jobs," said Governor Mitt Romney.
The BioTeach initiative seeks to offer the following to all MA public high schools by 2010:
Funding for new equipment to update science labs for biotechnology
Annual matching funds for replenishment of supplies and maintenance for sustainability
Ongoing teacher training that keeps pace with biotech discovery
School-to-career pathways in partnership with local colleges and Workforce Investment Boards
"Golden Helix" certification status by meeting industry-defined standards
"Biotechnology has the potential, like the space program in the 1960's, to stimulate an entire generation of science thinkers and enthusiasts," said Mark Trusheim, interim president, MBC. "Industry together with schools, government and community-based organizations, can inspire a generation who in turn, will create tomorrow's cures and new jobs."
BioTeach is an expansion of a MassBioEd initiative that began five years ago through corporate sponsorships and private funds. To date, 37 public high schools have improved their students' science labs through sorely needed equipment as a result of the funds raised.
"In 2003 alone, 19 schools received funding allowing trained teachers to offer exciting biotech lab experiences to nearly 2,500 students," said Cora- Beth Abel, Vice President, MassBioEd. "In addition to the private funds raised and corporate sponsorships, this federal grant will allow us to focus on schools in urban and high-needs communities where many high schools have only 'paper and pencil' labs."
BioTeach, by dynamic teaching of biotechnology, will spark student interest in science and so help fuel the biotech workforce pipeline.
"MassBioEd grant money has enabled public schools like Brighton High School to update their laboratory materials to keep up with the constantly evolving field of biotechnology. By exposing students to biotechnology methods, skills and issues, students are inspired to participate in advanced science courses, to explore careers in biomedical science, and to consider the impact of scientific discoveries on society," said Kenneth Salim, former biology teacher, Brighton High School.
MassBioEd and the MBC will continue to aggressively pursue corporate sponsorships, continue to host a successful annual golf tournament and illicit private funds in order to reach the $8 million campaign goal.

Kahala Corp. Announces Development Agreement For Australia With Restaurateur And Financier To Open 250 Locations
Kahala Corp. Announces Development Agreement For Australia With Restaurateur And Financier To Open 250 Locations
Franchising Plans Call for Introduction of Company's Seven Restaurant Concepts Making Australia Largest Market Outside of U.S.
September 2004 - Kahala Corp., a Scottsdale, Ariz.-based operator of seven quick service restaurant concepts totaling more than 1,000 locations, announced today it has entered into a development agreement with Chris Liberiou, an Australian restaurateur and financier, to open 250 locations throughout Australia over the next 10 years.
The announcement was made by Kevin Blackwell, chairman and chief executive officer of Kahala, which operates Surf City Squeeze, Samurai Sam's Teriyaki Grill, Ranch *1 Grilled Chicken, Frullati Café & Bakery, TacoTime, Rollerz and Great Steak & Potato restaurants throughout North America and in Puerto Rico, Japan, Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Greece, Thailand and Taiwan.
"We are extremely excited to be working with Chris Liberiou in bringing all of Kahala's restaurant concepts to Australia," Blackwell said. Kahala has been averaging one new store opening every day in the United States, and we are eager to continue the rapid growth of our brands overseas.
"Based on our research - and Mr. Liberiou's expertise - we are very confident that are concepts will be well received by the Australian dining public. We believe that during the next 10 years Australia can become Kahala's largest market outside of the United States," Blackwell concluded.
Under terms of the agreement, Liberiou - whose family has been in the restaurant business for over 50 years - will identify Australian franchise operators who will build and operate the new restaurants. Immediate plans call for initial franchise marketing efforts to begin immediately in Sydney and other major markets in Australia.
Liberiou, a dynamic entrepreneur possessing banking, legal and financing expertise, said he is confident that all seven of Kahala's restaurant concepts will resonate in his native land.
"Since carefully studying Kahala's business and food models, I have been very impressed with the uniqueness of the seven concepts that provides families with great food at an affordable price," Liberiou said. "Australians love American food and are looking for new and interesting ways to dine, which bodes well for the large variety of concepts that we will introduce to the market."
Blackwell said Kahala "has the experience and expertise to launch our various concepts in foreign countries, but we will also rely heavily on Mr. Liberiou's familiarity with the Australia audience. He thoroughly understands and agrees with our corporate mission of providing great food and great value for our patrons. We are excited about this new and innovative partnership."
Liberiou indicated he will actively seek prospective franchise owners throughout the country who would "like to get in on the ground floor with a company that has unsurpassed growth opportunities. A key component to our growth will be our desire to enter into multi-store agreements."
As one of the fastest growing franchising and marketing companies in North America, Kahala Corp. is a privately held corporation dedicated to the design, development and marketing of quick service restaurants. The company's expansive portfolio includes a variety of good-for-you branded concepts that are in step with today's growing trend towards low-fat, nutritious eating.
With more than $450 million in system wide sales and more than 1,000 locations, Kahala Corp. currently owns and franchises seven quick service restaurant concepts: Great Steak & Potato (acquired in March, 2004), serving genuine Philadelphia Cheesesteak sandwiches, fresh-cut French restaurant concepts, please visit the company website at www.kahalacorp.com.
