Phoenix Street Festival To Celebrate the Past, Future
Phoenix Street Festival To Celebrate the Past, Future
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
March 3, 2005
The Valley's largest street festival, Sunday on Central presented by APS, will pay homage to the past while looking to the future when it hits the streets April 3 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Central Avenue between Virginia and Osborn roads. The 2005 event, themed Retro to Metro, will celebrate the event's history and the future of METRO light rail on Central Avenue.
This year's Sunday on Central presented by APS is another premiere all-ages event with four stages of entertainment, dozens of food and craft booths, and much more. Lee Rocker of the band Stray Cats will headline the Main Stage, which also will feature Sistah Blue, Tribe 7, Cruz and the Boomers, and the Chris Parker Project.
The APS Circus Stage will give nationally renowned and Ringling Brothers Circus veteran clowns a chance to wow the crowds. Other entertainment includes performance group Urban Trash Bash, which will hit the pavement with street-level performances, and magician Craig Davis.
Those with a little spring in their steps can join a one-mile fun run on event day. The run will start at 11:30 a.m. on Central just south of Thomas Road. All ages and skills are welcome and participants can walk, skate, run or bike. Participants can register onsite for the free event and each finisher will receive a ribbon for their efforts.
In keeping with the retro theme, festival goers will be able to get up close to dozens of classic cars, as well as some antique APS vehicles. Valley Metro will be on hand with vintage buses from the last 50 years. Transportation buffs can get behind the wheel of each bus or enjoy games and interactive educational displays about the future of METRO light rail on Central Avenue.
The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department produces Sunday on Central presented by APS with support from official sponsors APS; Phoenix Transit; METRO light rail; Valley Metro; Arizona Department of Health Services - Tobacco Education Prevention Program; Hampton Inn Phoenix - Midtown; Geico Direct; KMLE; KOOL; KNIX; KEZ; The Peak; New Times; and ABC 15.
