2005 Volunteer Award Recipients Announced
TEMPE, Ariz. - John Gunby, Jr. was named 2005 Volunteer of the Year and
Allison Ringness was named as 2005 Youth Volunteer of the Year at the 20th
Annual Mayor and Council Volunteer Recognition Luncheon held on March 30.
Also receiving awards were Amy Lettick, Continuous Service; Maya Sherrod,
Special Project Award; Corona del Sol S.H.A.R.E. Club, Group Project Award;
and Ann Poulos, Site Supervisor of the Year.
These individuals serve in the City of Tempe Municipal Government Volunteer
Program and were selected from a field of 27 individuals nominated by city
staff and other volunteers. Final selections were made by an independent
committee comprised of community members active in the field of
volunteerism.
Volunteer of the Year John Gunby, Jr., is a 20 year-old Arizona State
University student who helps train Tempe Police Department dogs, which
requires him to don a "bite suit" and allow himself to be attacked by the
dogs. He also serves with the department's Bait Vehicle and Motorist
Assistance programs. He served almost 200 hours during 2004.
Allison Ringness, a 17 year home-schooled high school senior, has been
selected as the Youth Volunteer of the Year for her four years of continuing
service at the Tempe Public Library. During her tenure at the library,
Allison has served 575 hours and served as a Reading Club Assistant, Youth
Corps, Periodicals Aide, and Junior Page; she is currently on the Teen
Friends of the Library Advisory Board.
Receiving the Continuous Award was Amy Lettick, an 11-year veteran volunteer
of the Tempe Historical Museum. During her tenure as a museum volunteer, Amy
completed work on two major databases.
Arizona State University Interior Design student Maya Sherrod received a
Special Project Award for her work at the Petersen House Museum. Maya
researched two historic time periods and then redecorated two rooms at the
Petersen House reflecting these time periods.
Corona del Sol High School students Katie Metzger, Kimberly Hand and Lauren
Green accepted a Group Project Award for S.H.A.R.E. Club, a student-founded
service club at the high school. The club was recognized for its assistance
with city of Tempe special events and special projects.
Ann Poulos, Curator of Collections at the Tempe Historical Museum, was
awarded the Site Supervisor of the Year Award for her work with museum
volunteers. Ann directs a team of volunteers in addition to her work as a
curator.
Additionally, 51 volunteers received gold and silver level Presidential
Service Awards from the President's Council on Service and Participation, a
federal program that honors Americans for service to the community.
