Three Valley mayors to sign No-Incentive agreement
Three Valley mayors to sign No-Incentive agreement
PHOENIX, Ariz. - In a historic show of solidarity, the mayors of Phoenix,
Tempe and Chandler will sign the Valley's first "No-Incentive Zone"
agreement Tuesday, May 3 at noon. The signing will at Mountain Vista Park in
Phoenix, near the common borders of all three jurisdictions at 48th Street
and Knox Road.
Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman and Chandler Mayor Boyd
W. Dunn agree this is a tremendous opportunity and sends a clear signal that
cities can indeed cooperate when it comes to development along common
borders.
"In meeting with the Tempe and Phoenix mayors we have agreed there are
critical areas along this corridor that make for a viable incentive-free
zone," Mayor Dunn said. "I appreciate their openness to this idea, their
willingness to show a cooperative spirit, and I look forward to a successful
partnership for many years to come."
In recent weeks, each of the three municipalities' Councils has approved the
agreement in separate votes. The area concerned is a 25-square-mile zone
bounded roughly by Rural Road to the East, 32nd Street to the West, Pecos
Road to the South and Guadalupe Road to the North.
"It has been a great regional effort to craft local solutions to local
problems," said Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman. "Tempe will continue to pursue
similar agreements with other cities. I hope other communities will follow
suit."
"I am proud to stand with Mayor Hallman and Mayor Dunn as we take this
first, historic step," said Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon. "It's time for cities
to stop competing against each other and, instead, to start partnering in
competition against other regions in the country and the world."
Directions: From I-10, exit at Ray, head west for 100 yards, turn north on
50th Street and the road dead ends at the park entrance. The entrance road
leads to a parking lot For additional information contact Scott Phelps, City
