Also known as: Lammas (Loaf mass),
Lughnasadh,, Festival of Lugh., First Fruits, Bron Trogain
("Harvest's Beginning"). First day of Autumn.
The name Lughnassadh means "Games of
Lugh". Lugh is an Irish Solar God of ritual combat.
Date: August 1 or 15 degrees Leo.
Seasonal Importance: Earliest crops are
ready to harvest. Green harvest of herbs. First of 3 European
harvest festivals. Beginning of the waning of the Sun God's
power.
Activities: Sacrifice of the Harvest /
Grain God (see The Sun God's Life Cycle below). Sharing
the first bread from this year's harvest. Feast of first fruits.
Competitive games among the men and boys and men's mysteries.
