Also known as: Thanksgiving, Mab. Middle of
Autumn. Autumnal (Autumn) Equinox.
Mabon is named for the Welsh God of the
Harvest, the Sacred Son of Modron ("The Great Mother").
Date: Approximately September 21, 0
degrees Libra.
Seasonal Importance: Bountiful harvest.
Plants begin to brown and die. Day and night are equal. Second of
3 European harvest festivals. Native American harvest
celebration. Sacrifice of the Green Man and his descent into the
Underworld (see the CAW seasonal cycle below) and the
descent of Persephone (Kore) into the Underworld to reign for 6
months (see the Eleusinian ritual cycle below.)
Activities: Giving thanks for the
harvest. Recounting the year and its blessings. The Eleusinian
mysteries. Creation of Corn Dollies. Dionysian rituals of
intoxication and abandon. Rituals of equilibrium and balance.
