The information on the four mythic cycles below is taken from CovenCraft by Amber K (p. 150). My own training organized these cycles under the individual Sabbats and I found Amber K's organization much less confusing.

The Oak King, representing rebirth, rules the warm half of the year and at Litha his crown is taken by the Holly King, the God in His aspect as Lord of Death, who rules until Yule, when the Oak King returns. This seems to be the Druid myth. A variant has the Holly Boy struggling with the Ivy Girl, represented as the last sheaf of grain from the harvest, tied up with twining ivy.
Another cycle has the Goddess ruling the warm season ( Beltaine to Samhain) and the God ruling the cold season.
The infant Sun God is born at Yule, grows to manhood by Beltaine, reaches the height of his power at Litha and pours his energy into the crops, becoming a willing sacrifice at Lughnassad. The Goddess is his mother at Yule, his lover at Beltaineand the crone by Lughnassad.
The Goddess is born at Yule,, becomes a young woman by Beltaine, grows into the bountiful Earth Mother by Mabon and then the wise crone at Samhain.
