Also known as: Hamhain, All Hallow's Eve, Feast of the Dead (Halloween). First day of Winter.
The name Samhain is from the Celtic and means "summer's end" (there is no "Lord Samhain - God of the Dead" in Celtic mythology as suggested by some fundamentalist propaganda.)
Date: October 31 or 15 degrees Scorpio.
Seasonal Importance: Plants all die. Harvest the last bits now before the first snow. Brrr. The Celtic new year. Final of 3 European harvest festivals. Feast of the Dead because the Veil between the Worlds (physical and spiritual) is thinnest on this night. Day of the connection between life and death. Within the Grove we will celebrate the Summer Queen, Winter King mythic cycle by passing the torch of administration from the HPS to the HP at Samhain.
Activities: Honoring those who have died; making our peace with death; personal reflection; journeys within; resolving "shadow" issues.

History of Halloween : Myths, Monsters and Devils - an exceptionally unbiased site by a Christian attacking the myths propogated by "Halloween hysteria" pamphlets and tracts. Includes an excellent bibliography which even includes notations on the religious bias of the author. Not only an excellent source of information about Samhain and Halloween, but a prime example of how to evaluate sources for bias and historical accuracy.
