I know, I know... they play in St. Louis now... but I'll always be an LA Rams fan.
I became a fan shortly after high school. During my 3 years at North Hollywood High School, we had an awesome football team and my girlfriends and I went to all the games just for fun, for something to do on a Friday night. It was always fun because we won most of the time. In the process, I actually became a football fan. So, after I graduated, I missed football! Then in 1976, I caught a RAMS game on TV at someone's house and I became an instant fan. I was hooked! From that day forward, I never missed a game until they moved to St. Louis. On Sundays during football season you would either find me in front of the TV (if televised), glued to KMPC radio, or if I was lucky, at the stadium!
I became a Rams Booster Club member so I got special parking for the tailgate parties and I also got to go to the kick off luncheons. The best one: I won the table centerpiece (a big stuffed animal with a RAMS t-shirt & helmet) because my birthday fell closest to the beginning of the season! (Sept. 6) I got a few players autographs that day on the centerpiece: Carl Ekhern #55, Leroy Irvin # 47, John Robinson (coach), Mel Owens # 55, Jackie Slater #78, Charles White # 33, Mike Wilcher # 54, and Mike Lansford #1. I could have gotten more, but I didn't want to be too annoying!
I didn't even miss the RAMS game when I went to the hospital to have my first child. Kristin was born during the 2nd quarter of a very exciting game where the RAMS kicked butt and won back our division title after a long, dry spell of losing it for 5 long years. Ironically, the RAMS were playing the St. Louis Cardinals! They beat them 46-14 that day. I went into heavy labor just as the game started and I didn't want to miss too much - so I worked fast! She was born at 1:45 p.m. and then they whisked her away to the nursery (like they used to do) and wheeled me into the recovery room where - GASP - there was NO TV. I was so upset! I asked them if they could bring one in and they said no! and looked at me kind of funny. I asked if they could move me to a room with a TV - NOOOO. So Kristin's dad, a true RAMS fan, ran back and forth between the recovery room and our car, listening to the radio for 10 minutes at a time, and bringing me constant updates. Again, KMPC to the rescue! Is it any wonder Kristin is a RAMS fan? She never hesitates to tell other RAMS fans about being born during this big game!
When the RAMS played the Saints on December 31st, 1990 in New Orleans, I went with the Booster Club and we stayed at the Monteleone Hotel in the French Quarter. My girlfriend Violet and I found the hotel where the RAMS were staying and got there late and caught up with Kevin Greene and Doug Reed and also met Aaron Cox's wife - very nice lady (Dec 30th, night before the game). The RAMS were out of any playoff hopes, and they lost... but their loss pushed the Saints into the playoffs for the first time, so the city was really crazy that New Years Eve following the game. Bourbon Street ROCKED. So in a weird way, the RAMS came through for us... they gave the city a reason to celebrate more than just the new year. And the Saints fans were extremely gracious and friendly to us before and after the game.
When Georgia moved the team to St. Louis I was crushed. I remember when my car registration came up for renewal that year, I slammed down my personalized plates at the AAA office in San Bernardino and said, "keep 'em." (before I went in, my husband said, "Are you sure you want to do this? You might regret it later. At least keep one of them". I didn't keep one and he was right... I do regret it!) In a moment of anger I also sold my beloved RAMS jacket and hat collection in a garage sale. Luckily my other RAMS stuff was packed away safely in boxes! I went through a few years of mourning and refused to watch any football at all. After we moved to Arizona I decided it was more fun watching games than being whiny. Just before the start of the 1999 season, my husband's dad sent us some tickets he had purchased for us in Las Vegas. Two $10 bets - for the RAMS to win the NFC Conference game and the Superbowl. They were long shots because when he bought the tickets, Kurt hadn't thrown yet! He had framed them in a two-fold picture frame and had typed "PICTURE THIS" under the tickets. Well, picture our excitement as the weeks went on and Kurt Warner looked like Joe Montana and the RAMS looked like a Superbowl contender! At the beginning of the season I got on AOL and found as many RAMS fans as I could in the Phoenix area and contacted them and we got a group together that met at Famous Sams, Bell & 51st (or thereabouts). That was where we watched the Superbowl in 2000. Now we watch the games at Famous Sams at 35th Ave & Greenway, and go together to RAMS games when they come to Phoenix. If you're a RAMS fan in this area - join us! It's much better to watch games together than alone!
