Dave Pivin's Scenes from Isle Madame - 1999
Pictures from a visit to Isle Madame, August 1999.

Sunset over Poulamon Bay, taken from in front of Vic and Olive Dawson's home. Thanks to Olive for giving me the painted flat rock from the beach which captured this scene in all its beauty.

A composite picture of my mother in 1915 and myself in 1999. The home is currently occupied by Valma Poirier, my 2nd cousin and closest relative still living on the island. This home is one of the oldest on the island still occupied. It has been continuously in the Poirier family for over 200 years in Poirierville.

I went to visit Val on my last day on the island, not knowing that this was the house in the picture. When I showed him the picture of my mother, I asked him if he knew where this house was, he said "You're in it!" I was really surprised and pleased with this discovery. We went right outside and took the picture. Val pointed out the renovations which have changed the appearance of this side of the house.

The "anchor" of the community, La Picasse is a marvelous combination of modern internet technology with the island's French traditions. Computers, the internet and video conferencing allow students from all over the region to take classes. The French language brought here in the 1700s lives on.

Gradually eroding away from right to left, this mound in the surf once had a large lighthouse which marked the eastern-most end of Isle Madame.
