AASTA
Background
A videoconference meeting was held at 1:00 pm on Friday, July 30, 2004 linking participants at Arizona State University, the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University.
The draft charter and bylaws document was reviewed with suggested amendments. A general discussion took place concerning membership and governance.
The consensus of the group was that the categories of membership as defined in the draft document be reconsidered. The suggestion was made to establish “full member” and “associate member” classifications. This model will be explored.
The request was made to express the nominating process more explicitly as it relates both to membership and officerships. A suggestion was also made to ensure that AASTA’s volunteer leadership reflect geographic representation. These suggestions will be considered and the corresponding document sections will be amended.
Meeting participants expressed the desire that some structural means be considered to ensure that the integrity of AASTA’s non-partisan status be preserved both by explicit expression in the Charter and perhaps by establishing safeguarding procedures within the governance sections. Participants requested that other organizations be examined as possible models for this type of language.
State Charter – The consensus of the participants was that consideration of
obtaining a state charter be postponed. Participants clearly
preferred that AASTA incorporate as quickly as possible
under its own charter.
Incorporation – There was a consensus to move towards incorporation as
rapidly as possible, and to pursue philanthropic support as
well as pledges for inaugural membership as soon as possible.
NYAS - Patrick Burkhart reported on his invitation to site visit the
New York Academy of Science on August 2, 2004. Many of
the topics raised in the meeting today will be explored
with the NYAS President and his staff.
