Descendants of Carl Eduard Kienow (Senior)/Frederika Sophia Höst

Carl Eduard is my great great grandfather. Unfortunately the family has lost the date and place of his birth. There is strong circumstantial evidence that he is Carl Eduard, son of Johann and Euphrosine Kienow. This evidence being: the fact that he was in the Watertown, Wisconsin area for about five years during which Carl Eduard's twin sister, Emilie Louise (Kienow) Osterreich was there; he was trained as a school teacher and was called as pastor to start two Lutheran churches in Wisconsin; and his age as given on the ship's manifest would not conflict with a birthdate of November 12, 1825.

Their marriage is recorded in the church records on LDS Micro Film #1334803 and titled "Plonzig-Rosenfelde-Garz an der Plone." The date of the Marriage is September 30, 1850 in the Church Book for Rosenfelde. Unfortunately, unlike some of the church books, very little additional information was recorded. Carl Eduard's parent's names were not recorded, and since we still have no proof that he was the twin of Emilie, we need that information. The marriage record was our best hope. To see the map of present day Poland where the Kienow/Höst, Kienow/Durr, and Oesterreich/Kienow's emigrated from go to Rosenfelde

Carl Eduard and Frederika traveled to the United States on the clipper ship John Bertram with three small children; Wilhelm, age 7, Martha, age 5, and Eliese, age 3. They arrived in New York City on May 26, 1858. Frederika may have been pregnant during the voyage because a child, Anna Euphrosine Kienow, died in Watertown on October 27, 1858. I have not determined who the parents were as of now. To read about the John Bertram, and to see a plate of an oil painting of her, go to John Bertram.

Carl Eduard and Frederika Sophia settled in Janesville, Wisconsin in about 1870, after stops in Watertown, Farmington, and Fort Atkinson. Their six children remained in Janesvile, and the last surviving child, son Albert, died there in 1928. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post in Janesville is named after their son John, who was in Company A, First Wisconsin Infrantry, during the Spanish American War.

They had one surviving grandson, Edward Paul Wilhelm, my grandfather, who died in Edgerton, Wisconsin in 1955. His descendants are scattered across the United States.
