I have added Malakowski/Kienow as a result of an email I received from Sandy Atkins. Ernestine could be a key to linking up the families in that they also went to Minnesota. This also provides a link to Kienows in the Kolberg area, and a town called Gross Jestin, slightly north of Meesow, and on the Baltic shore. Read Sandy's email: Email from Sandy Atkins
An interesting fact about Ernestine Malakowsky is that she came to America with two Johan Kienows, and that she lived with a Johan Kienow, whom we have lost at this time. There is also a reference to living (later, I assume) with an Uncle Julius (Kienow) in the spoken record. The only Julius I am aware of so far is Ferdinand Julius, son of Kienow/Durre. Both F. J. and his father Carl Ludwig homesteaded in same section (Section 4, T38,R29 T) of Minnesota, along side brother August. But----, we know of no Johans, or Johns in that line so far. The mystery continues. Remember, we still don't know what became of Johan and Sophie Kienow Johan and Sophie who came to America in 1854.
A check of Minnesota land records show that an August Malakowsky established a homestead in September of 1890 (S4,T145N,R46W) while a John Kienow established a homestead in March 1890 in S4,T146,R46W. This would be about six miles away. Redwing is 51 miles from Faribault, MN, which is the headquarters of the Kienow/Steffen branch. Kolberg is closer to Meesow than the other Kienow towns, so there may be a closer relationship here.
Sandra Atkins has agreed to be the contact for researchers of Carl Malakowski and Ernestine Kienow. You can contact Sandy at sandatk@together.net
