What and Where is Pommern?

The Kienows emigrated from Pomerania beginning in about 1850. Many Americans do not even know that there was a place called Pomerania, and the only reference to Pomerania which has survived in American culture today is the breed of dog, Pomeranian. Yet, Pommern (the German name) has a rich and long history. Gene Maas' family emigrated from the same general area of Pommern as did the Kienows. He has developed an excellent web site which relates the history of Pommern and consented to our linking to it. His web site is Gene Maas

There seem to have been at least two branches of the Kienow family in Pommern. One was located in the vicinity of Daber, in Kreis Naugard, and the other in the vicinity of Stargard, and Kreis Saatzig and Kreis Pyritz. A web site which contains photos from the town of Labes, now Lobez, Poland is Labes Robert Knebel has provided a list of towns near Daber. Daber
