Most any high power rifle can do ~4000 fps. This gun was built with hand selected components to go much faster. Previous attempts at higher velocity caused failure and I mean a failure of the bullet to hold together under such extreme forces. Even this barrel with a shallow twist of 1 in 12 will generate extreme RPM causing the bullet to fail in flight. With this barrel and a velocity at 4600fps the bullet will still spin at over 275,000 rpm. A standard bullet with a full metal jacket and lead core will explode under such forces in less than 100 yards after exiting the barrel (I know). This problem will be overcome with selected components using thicker metal and less lead fill. Chamber pressures during testing can not exceed 50,000 cup pessure. At 4600fps the chamber pressures are calculated to be 49,500 cup or real close to max! The pressure is caused by the inability of air to flow down a round tube (barrel) at over 4000fps and not the bullet plugging the barrel as expected? I have a solution and will experiment with it this winter. The goal is to go over 5280fps or Mach 5, with reduced pressure.

Final Test
Stupid bullets can't handle the RPM so I made my own out of drill bit shafts. I put the .224 bullets into 30 cal Teflon Sabos.
Speed run performed at Sugarloaf Mountain, AZ. Several key factors are not included in this text. I don't want you getting any crazy ideas and trying this at home. In fact I will never do this again and will not even consider helping you repeating this experiment. There are too many unknowns. I did it and got away with it once.
( I do like my face and being able to see)
Mach 1 is ~ 1100 fps
Mach 5 is ~ 5500 fps
This is Crazy !
I have pushed my luck to the edge !
Verified with standard bullet.
This could be civilian record??? Don't know !
