I never heard of Pivot Rock until someone said something about it a few years ago. It's north of Payson just off of HY 87. I mean to tell you it was nice ! I only drove down the road about 1000ft and found a great place to park the truck ,,, and a person could camp here too! I took off on the ATV and started searching the turn offs, it was a real gold mine of private camping spots ! Did I mention it was 72 degrees.
72 S W E E T !
This is one of the better camping spots (above). It is on the end of a meadow (that would be accessible with a 2wd pickup truck). There is a beautiful creek passing next to the camping area. It is strange how uniform the gravel in the creek is,,,,, looks like someone put it there. The water is so clean ! (and cold)
Funny,,, it's Friday afternoon and I have only seen a few people all day ?
This area is full of ATC trails,,, or are they jeep trails for those that don't like their paint job ? Never the less it had great ATV riding trails, with many surprises. Don't get excited I don’t think this is a fishing lake. It is just a really big water retention pond for wildlife (or is it?).
This area needs more exploring !
Ride 5/14/05
Cherry over Mingus Mountain and down to Jerome
I have tried ATV club X (name with held to protect the innocent) and they don't seem to show up, co-incidents maybe, or maybe not. I thought I would try Club Y (name with held to protect the innocent)….. AND THEY SHOWED UP ! , co-incidents maybe, most likely not!
Poor guy forgot his ATV keys (shit happens) but he gets an A+ for showing up!
Here are the 4 remaining riders (that have their keys) as you can see they have Sport (Go Fast) ATV's and I have a Utility (Go Slower) ATV.
They would pull over and take a rest about every 10 miles. This spot offered a view few have seen, "Looking Down On Jerome". Seemed funny to be riding down to Jerome !
For me it seems funny for people to actually show up. I have proof they were really there, see someone took my picture ! This is a really nice bunch of guys. They drove faster than me but would stop for rests and I would catch up. I would leave the rest area first and they would pass me.
Left: This is an interesting shot of Jerome with about 5X zoom .
Below: OUCH ! All good things must come to an end. A wise man told me once "If you aren't crashing you aren't driving fast enough". Lets just say one of the riders was going fast enough (name withheld to protect the innocent from his wife). Below left, you can see some kind of rock thing to the left edge of road, next picture about center a single scuff mark in the road, next picture shows out of control slide to the left bush, right this ATV is jacked up and bent handlebars too. This poor guy took a good hit to the head. He doesn't even know me….. Oh Yea ! He didn't know me before the accident.
See, slow riding utility ATVs are always needed to bring up the rear and pick up the pieces.
This was enjoyable ride overall. I met some nice people, seen some nice scenery. Even with the mishap I learned something and will rethink what I take on a ride. 1) A pen and paper would be nice. 2) All riders should carry cards with their picture, cell phone number, and some emergency contact information. 3) I'm still thinking about this !

Yes, even I have projects on the weekend. This weekend I just couldn't get out! I will have a goofy work schedule for the next few weekends and may not be able to ride. Don't e-mail me. Get an ATV of your own and get a life!
If you get the shakes watch Star Trek reruns !
It's getting hot ! I have to start exploring North
6/3/2005 Pivot Rock Canyon Area
Who does this ? Someone blocked the road. I think if it was the Forest Service they would have posted it !
