About AZVegan

What is AZVegan????
AZVegan is a web site designed with the hopes of providing a comprehensive listing of animal rights/vegetarian/vegan events and information for people in Arizona.  By providing one site for all local events AZVegan hopes to unite individuals and groups with shared interests.

What is a vegan?
A vegan (pronounced VEE-gun) is someone who does not eat or use animal products or animal by-products; a strict vegetarian who does not eat eggs, or dairy products. The term vegan was coined in London in 1944 by Donald Watson, a founding member of the The Vegan Society in Great Britain.  He used the first three and last two letters of the word vegetarian to form the word vegan, because "veganism starts with vegetarianism and carries it through to its logical conclusion."  Please take a moment to read the essay, "On Being Vegan" from Vegan Outreach.

What is veg*n?
A shorthand way of writing "vegetarian/vegan", meaning to include both categories.

Who can submit items to AZVegan?
Any person or group who fights the exploitation/abuse of animals and promotes a healthier, more compassionate vegetarian/vegan lifestyle.

What will be listed?
Adopt-a-thons, protests, potlucks, meetings, fundraisers, etc.

What won't be listed?
Events that promote the sale or consumption of animals or animal products, or the exploitation of animals in any form will not be listed.

When can items be submitted?
AZVegan is continually updated, so events can be submitted at any time.

Is there any cost?
AZVegan is a privately funded, volunteer project. There will never be any solicitation for donations or membership dues to be listed on the site.

What is AZVegan Voices?
AZVegan Voices meets at 7:00pm on the last Tuesday of the month.  AZVegan Voices takes action for animals by focusing on letter writing.  Letters to the editor on timely topics, letters to elected officials on current legislation, letters to businesses asking for veg options or animal-friendly products...every letter written is a voice for the animals.  Though the focus will be on letter writing, AZVegan Voices may occasionally take on other projects.   Click here for more info.

Who is AZVegan?
I am pleased to say that the New Times published an interview with me about Farm Sanctuary and vegetarianism.  You can read the online version here:
http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/issues/2003-09-25/culture/speakeasy.html

I have also had an article published online through About.com on being vegetarian/vegan in the Phoenix area.  Check it out at:  http://phoenix.about.com/od/foodanddrink/a/vegan.htm

On November 17, 2004, I joined animal advocates from around the country to celebrate the passage of SB 1520 - the historic legislation banning foie gras in California.  The event was held at the House of Blues in West Hollywood.  It was covered in major news stories from The New Yorker to Celebrity Justice.  Read more and view photos from the event.  (I'm the lucky one in the shot with Noah Wyle!)
