CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA MILITARY RANK USED DURING THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES

Have you ever saw pictures or watched movies of the War Between the States and wonder what the Confederate rank insignia on their uniforms meant? The Union officer insignia is the same as used today, the Confederate officer insignia was based on European military rank that is also still in use. These diagrams came from the "Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies", later reprinted as the "Official Atlas of the Civil War;(Plate CLXXI)":
