Welcome
to the 7th & 8th Grade Confirmation pages
for Prince of Peace, Springfield, Virginia.
What is "Confirmation"? Confirmation
is an important part of growth and learning in the Christian faith. The
pages on PoP's confirmation portion of the website help give students and
their families information about the instructional process and the
blessings that come with studying God's Word during this key time in life.
We at PoP are certainly glad that we can be partners with parents during
this time of faith formation.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor
Ken Green, Minister of Nurturing

Confirmation
at PoP
Our
Confirmation ministry at PoP involves two years of instruction for 7th
& 8th graders. Classes are held each Tuesday during the school year
between the hours of 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.
Our goals
for confirmation class can be summed up in this way:
* We
desire that students to come away from confirmation with a deeper
connection with Jesus. This living relationship with their living Lord
is filled both with “head knowledge” and “heart knowledge.”
* In the
process, especially as we meet in small groups, students build a deeper
connection with one another. They make connections to a caring Christian
community through Confirmation.
* These
relationships build bridges to the broader community—the family of God
at PoP, and the community all around us that needs His love.
The
Routine: Each week the students spend time building that connection
with one another in “small group” time (typically
the 1st hour),
sharing such things as their “highs and lows,” relating those to their
walk with Christ during that week, and praying for one another. This small
group time can also serve as time to review previous lessons, recite
memory work
Our large
group time (typically
the 2nd hour), forms
the core of instruction for our class. Every-other year brings a different
"flavor" to our instruction.
* On odd
years we focus on the stories of faith found in the Bible. Through
understanding God’s activity in His world, we learn of His love, His
character, and His desire for our lives. We also come to see how we have
been connected with His plan for us—that plan which found it’s
fulfillment in Christ’s coming, His death as our substitute, and His
resurrection. And even more than that, we come to see the ways in which
He is active in our lives here and now.
* During
even years we focus on the basic teachings of the Christian faith.
Specifically, we discuss the Ten commandments and their meanings, the
Apostles' Creed, the Lord's Prayer and the devotional life, Baptism,
Confession and Absolution, and the Lord's Supper. To help guide our
discussions we search God's Word in the Bible and we look at the Small
Catechism authored by Martin Luther.
Students are
encouraged to take notes based on our class discussions, and many times a
student is chosen to type a summary on a laptop/projector combination for
all to see. These notes are posted in the "Resources"
section of the Confirmation website .

to assist students to get the most out of their confirmation experience.
- "Guides and notes" sum up the content of
what we have been learning in our mid-week confirmation classes
- "Confirmation Connection" is a
mini-newsletter for parents to help them stay up to date throughout the
confirmation process.
