Week presented: 09/09 & 09/16/03
9/9/03 – spent time getting to know the students; gave an overview of how faith is a relationship.
9/16/03 – reviewed the student “names” and reviewed the "Faith = Relationship topic"
Topic: Faith = Relationship
|
(a relationship is a connection w/someone else; | God has connected us to Himself through His Son, Jesus.) | ![]() |
Our faith in God is
something that is living and active. It is a relationship with a living
being—our Living Lord.
Questions for Students:
*What are the key things that go into
a relationship? (i.e. a relationship between a
mom and dad, boyfriend/girlfriend, or 2 BF’s)
* And how is that relationship built
up or maintained? (the basics)
4 Trust
4 Love
4 Care
4 Time spent together (what couple with a good relationship doesn’t want
to spend time together?)
4 Communication
(includes both listening so the other person can share themselves, and sharing
yourself through your talking)
* illustration - can take place as a couple
spends time on the phone; boyfriends/girlfriends, or 2 BF’s, love to talk with
each other and share thoughts, ideas, etc.
4 Commitment – will stick
by the other person
4 Sacrifice – willing to
give up something for the other person to be happy
4 Give gifts
4 Have similar interests
Now, take that list, and
apply those same things to having a relationship with God.
* How would that relationship work?
* What would that relationship look like?
(same list could work in our relationship
with God)
4 Trust – We need to believe in
God. We trust that God will take care of us.
4 Love – God loves us (and
shows that love to us), and we love God back.
4 Care – God takes care of us,
and God cares about what is going on in our lives.![]()
4 Time spent together – we spend time with
God when we go to church, when we worship. (Would
sending a part of 1 day a week be enough to help a couple’s relationship be as
good as they’d want it to be? Again, what couple with a good relationship
doesn’t want to spend time together?)
* God also
invites us to spend time with Him each day (prayer, reading His word, hanging
with Christian friends, talking about Him to others)
4 Communication - (includes both listening so the other person can
share themselves, and
sharing yourself through your talking)
* Prayer – we get to talk to God, and He is there always to listen.
* Reading the Bible, Listening to God’s word – that’s how God
communicates with
us and share’s His messages and guidance.
(–
Pastor Ken says, “My momma told me that God gave us 2 ears and 1 tongue for a
reason—so that we would work to listen to people better.” Same thing goes with
God—He wants us to listen to Him.)
4 Commitment – Jesus showed His ultimate
commitment to us on the cross. Confirmation helps us understand better what it
means to be committed to Jesus.
4 Sacrifice – Jesus sacrificed
Himself on the cross so that we could have a relationship with Him and our
Heavenly Father. We give us sinful things that we might enjoy to sacrifice
ourselves, because our relationship with Jesus is that important.
4 Give gifts – God gave His Son;
Jesus gives us forgiveness, eternal life; He gives His Body and Blood in Holy
Communion. We give ourselves, including our time, talents, and our offerings as
expressions of how grateful we are to God for His love.
4 Have similar interests – holiness, purity,
eternal things; not to mention that God is really interested in our lives
in this world.
TO SUMMARIZE: Confirmation is a way to help that relationship with God get
stronger and stronger. It helps us to recognize all that God has done to help
make this relationship possible and to make this relationship work. And it
helps us to understand our role in the building of this relationship.
