UNEDITED
Week presented: 11/25/03 “1 more week until_________________!”
Topic: What’s in a name? [Jacob-Israel] ….
Review: : The Bible stories illustrate (that is, they draw a picture for us) what God is like. The stories don’t just exist so that we can learn facts about the past. They convey to us truths about God.
Things
we learn from the stories that we’ve looked at so far
(Creation
of the World – Adam and Eve – The Fall into Sin – Noah and the Ark -
Abraham & Isaac)
Today we look at Jacob & Esau (Genesis, chapters 25-27):

THINGS WE LEARNED TODAY:

Today
we look at Jacob and his new name and the start of his family
Genesis-
chapter 32 verse 22-30
·
Jacob’s
name was changed to Israel because he wrestled with God.
·
A
new name = a new identity.
·
We
have received a new name in our baptism—“Christian.” We have been Baptized
into the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (into the name of God!).
·
We
have a new identity = children of God.
How does that
change how we live and what we do?
·
Jacob
met God face to face and lived. We meet Jesus “face to face” as we
receive Him in Holy Communion. Just as Jacob was a part of God’s family, so we
are part of God’s family.
