Topic: Who is Jesus?

Today we look at Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

4      If someone were to drop in from another planet and ask you, “Who is Jesus?” (and maybe ask, What’s all this fuss over the movie about Him?”), how would you answer them?

o       Questions to help you:
What is unique about when and where Jesus lived?
What he did during his life?
Who he hung around with?
His family?
His birth?
His death?
Is he around today?
Why do people think he’s so important?

4      What makes Jesus important to you? [That’s a personal question….To answer that is to answer the “so what” of faith.]

4      Ok, ok, ok. So we know a whole lot about Jesus—a lot of facts. But let’s figure out why those things are so important….

o       Start with His birth…. His conception, even….What’s so special?    Read Matthew 1:18-25 (note the names!)
– Jesus = He will save His people from their sins
– Emmanuel = God with us

Luke 1:26-37
(how was this to be?)
– the angel Gabriel announced it
– He was Born of a virgin; the Holy Spirit would cause Mary to become pregnant
– Jesus is a direct descendant of David; He is also a “descendant” of God (the Son of God)
– Jesus was 100 % man, and 100 % God.

Luke 2:1-12
-He was born of the virgin Mary, Jesus was born on a humble place, he was born in human flesh and body,

Luke 2:8-20
– the conditions under which Jesus was born
– the angels sang, the message was told, the shepherds saw, and the shepherds told the message

John 1:1-14, 18
(especially vv. 1 & 2, 3 & 10, 14, and 18)
– Jesus is eternal
– He always existed, even before creation, with the Father.
– Jesus is God.
– Jesus was involved in creation.
– Jesus made his home with us.
– Jesus made the Father known [in other words, if you want to know what God is like, look to Jesus!].

o       So, what’s so unique about Jesus?
– Jesus is 100% man and 100% God.

4      Now…it’s time to use your brain (and the Holy Spirit): WHY did all these things need to be this way for Jesus to do what He did?
– Jesus had to be 100% man to face obstacles that all of mankind faced. That way He could identify with us, that way He could suffer and die in our place, that way He could be the substitute for the punishment for our sins.

– Jesus had to be
100% God to overcome these obstacles, to never have sinned, to rise from the dead, to defeat Satan.
