Commander's Comments

(1st Paragraph of Newsletter)

On January 16th, war broke out in the Middle East. At this time, I was sitting in a motel room in Topeka, Kansas, as my job called me out of town, I can't explain all the feelings that ran through me.

Commander's Comments

I hope everyone is enjoying our wonderful Nebraska weather!!! Soon it will be over and all of us will start thinking of better times outside. Here are a couple of very important numbers: 128 and 2963. You will see why in another article in this newsletter. I want to thank everyone who braved the cold and snow to come down and support the Post. We had a couple of lean weeks but we will pull through. A special thanks to all of our volunteers for their hard work. It is greatly appreciated!

I mentioned in a previous article about getting back to being a Legion Post. I am proud to say we are heading in the right direction. We sponsor two Cub Scout Troops that meet at the Post once a month. We will be the Host Post for three Legion Baseball Tournaments this summer. We will be sending four to Boys State and four to Junior Law Cadets. Also, for the first time in a very long time, we will award three $500 scholarships to High School Seniors who qualify.

Also, there was a spur of the moment idea by Jim Wentz. We asked around the bar for everyone to go home and take out of their closets, coats that they do not wear anymore. After all, this is the United States and nobody should freeze to death. We delivered over 60 coats to the OPEN DOOR MISSION !!

GREAT JOB EVERYONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happenings at the Post:

FAT TUESDAY - Jambalaya and Chicken Gumbo

LENT - Fish & Fries

S.A.L. BOWLING TOURNAMENT

CHILI COOK-OFF (after Bowling Tour.)

We still need your support and we need more volunteers. I would like to open a NEW VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR position at the Post. The basic duties are listed below. If you are interested, please call the Post.

A Field Service Orientation was held for Auxiliary members after the August meeting. This allows the hours worked in the field service for the Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation to be counted by National. These accumulated hours are reported to the government and increases our effectiveness in lobbying for the Veterans' issues. Another Field Service Orientation will be held at our Post on November 15th in case you missed this one and want to attend.

BIG THANKS to Frank Vail

Frank does so much to represent our Post on the State and National levels. He spends ALOT of time on the road attending Conventions and meetings all over, so a special thanks to you Frank !

Wow, is it spring yet? Maybe this will help.

Golf Outing in JUNE

The S.A.L. Golf Outing is in the plans for June, so maybe that will help a bit. We are finalizing the plans now, so when it's all complete, we will let you know ALL the details.

Frank Vail and Dennis Meyers were honored with Lifetime Memberships in December. On behalf of myself and ALL of the S.A.L. members, we thank-you for ALL you have done for the Squadron and all our Veterans. Keep up the good work!

We are once again sending out membership renewal reminder letters. If you are getting one, this is the second one sent out, so please renew your membership.

I would like to thank all of our volunteers once again for all of their hard work! We could always use more help, so please think about lending a hand if you can.

I wish you all a Happy Valentines Day. Lets hope the groundhog is good to us this year. We deserve it!

Once again, remember our Veterans, past and present. That's what we are all about.

Thank-You

HONOR GUARD

As you know, every Veteran deserves to be laid to rest with honor. So many times we take things for granted and don't recognize and thank those people who take time to volunteer to honor our fallen comrades. I mentioned some numbers earlier, they mean:

128 funerals were attended last year by our
Honor Guard with 2,963 man hours put in.

These hours are spent in freezing cold, snow, rain, and the blazen heat of summer. Following is a list of our Honor Guard members, which include Legion and VFW members. All of them get a BIG THANK-YOU.

Thank-You very much!

If you see any of them, give them a handshake, pat on the back, and a hearty Atta Boy. They definitely deserve it.

One way for the Post to save money would be to receive the NEWSLETTER VIA E-MAIL.

We spend close to $1,000 each month on printing and mailing.

If 30% -50% of our members could use e-mail instead of mailing, we could cut these costs.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE E-MAIL NEWSLETTER RATHER THAN SNAIL MAIL,

PLEASE E-MAIL YOUR REQUEST TO:

AND THE AUXILIARY MEMBERS CAN E-MAIL THEIR REQUESTS TO KIM @:

The S.A.L. welcomes back CHRIS GRUBER after his last tour in Iraq. We can't begin to thank him enough for ALL he has done for our country.

On behalf of all of us from the S.A.L. we would like to thank Scott Anderson for his generous donation of the new bulb for our projection TV. Now that its up and going again, make sure you all come down and enjoy it. The S.A.L. has donated all these TC's for all of you to enjoy, so please come down and take advantage of them.

Sally Johnson

Hi all. I hope that everyone made it through the awful Nebraska weather without to many problems.

Mary Bauder and I attended the Mid-Winter Educational Conference in January and had a great time. The attendance was down due to the weather, but those of us who made it learned a lot. Our own

Patty Polson was honored for recruiting 22 new members and also won a drawing for those who had recruited at least three new members. Way To Go PATTY!!

Stacy Pohl is working hard on the Scholarships that have been sent to the five Millard High Schools and also three $500 Unit school scholarships that are for the children, grandchildren or Auxiliary members themselves. Watch for the Units Applications on the web site and they will be also available at the Legion Club. The school counselors have most of the other applications. There are some that do not necessarily require tha applicant to be a high school senior, so be sure to ask Stacy or me if there are any scholarships that you or a family member may qualify for.

Girls State has begun and we miss Diane Carpenter who was the Chairman of this important project for many, many years. Thank-You Diane for a job well done, and also thank-you to Judy Welker, Theresa Sempek, and Bev Unger for judging for so many years as well. We will be continuing the Girls State Program and have five new girls from the local High Schools will be attending Girls State in June.

Kathy Mazur, District Vice President, visited our meeting in January and spoke about the importance of obtaining new members. She also asked that we all attend the District 8 Convention to be held at the Arlington Post on February 18th. Our Unit participates by entering a Prayer Book, Publicity Book, History Book and a Poppy Centerpiece for competition.

School bot with books

The Auxiliary collected 10 new back packs for two local middle schools for our January Donation. Each month the Auxiliary has and will be donating items to local schools to show our support for education.

Members - watch for an upcoming "Bakeless" Bake Sale and also for a Mother/Daughter tea with special guests being our Gold Start Mothers and Sisters.

I will also be contacting the Senior ladies that have shown an interest in an afternoon get together with old friends from the Auxiliary. If you have not contacted me yet, please do so. This is just and informal get together for those that amy not like to drive at night and also miss seeing their old friends and the opportunity to make new ones.

Drop calendars off by BOX by the Office at the Post

Last at not least, please bring any kind or size of calendars for the troops, and deposit them in the large box by the office

Sally Johnson, Auxiliary President

From the Adjutant

Membership renewals have been coming in steadily. Just a reminder to those who have not renewed their membership to either come in to the Post and pay or mail in your payment.

The next reminder from National will be sent December 1, 2009. If you know an eligible Veteran or sons, daughters, or grandson of a Veteran, bring them to the club and encourage them to join. Let them know what the American Legion has to offer. A lot of you have been calling about your membership notices. These are sent out by National. If you receive a notice and have already paid your dues and received your card, ignore that notice. If you have already paid your dues, but have not received your card within 2 weeks, please call and let me know. I will check the status of your card.

For those of you who wish to buy a lifetime membership (PUFL), the cost varies by age. Starting October 1, 2009, you can make monthly payments up to 36 months for this. You will then receive payment coupons from National. Hopefully this will make it easier for you if you want this benefit, but cannot afford a one-time payment. If you have any other questions about eligibility or membership, please feel free to call me. Thank you for your support and service to our country.

Vincent Mahoney, Adjutant
