Millard American Legion Post #374

NUT FRY has been cancelled.

Please WELCOME our new Volunteer Bartender Jackie to the Club - Jackie has previous experience with bartending and Keno and has a GREAT personality!

Here it is, already the first of November. Thanksgiving and Christmas are fast approaching. A good place to rest from the hustle and bustle is right here at the Legion. Come on down and relax, have a few toddies, and enjoy great company. I know the economy is not in the greatest shape right now, but if you still want to go out and have a good meal at a reasonable price, the Legion offers dinners on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as well as on some Thursdays and Fridays. New this month will be Doreen serving All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti on the third Wednesday of each month. No steaks or burgers will be served on that night due to limited space in the kitchen and limited volunteers to help. Speaking of volunteers, please consider throwing your name in the hat - we could sure use the help. The Legion will begin serving lunches again - YEAHHHHH beginning this month. Lunches will be Tuesday thru Friday. Jane Walton will be in charge and will start out with a very limited menu to see what kind of response we get. Our food sales have been down, so if you can help support the Post, please do so. You can check the calendar to see what days we are serving food.

We are always open to new ideas, so make sure to join us at the Legion Family Meeting on Sunday, November 8th @ 2:00 p.m. This meeting is open to all Post 374 members. This should be a very informative session to express complaints, concerns, opinions, and ideas. I picked this time because it is after church and early enough in the day so you don't have to drive at night. Please plan on attending.

Braman Mortuary will be hosting two information sessions for Veterans and their families on November 10th @ 2:00 p.m. and @ 7:00 p.m. You can call 895-3400 for more information.

Unfortunately, this year the S.A.L. in canceling its Annual Nut Fry (held the night before Thanksgiving) due to limited space. They are talking about moving it to summertime in order to use outdoor seating. We will look forward to that.

We had a discussion about New Year's Eve at the Post. Come join us and enjoy some good company. We will have tunes on the jukebox, a dance floor, and some hors d'oeuvres. We can talk more about this at the Legion Family Meeting on November 8th.

I am a firm believer that Post 374 has the best Auxiliary in the State. I'm sure the Halloween Party was a success, and the Christmas Party will be the same. These ladies work extremely hard to support the Veterans. They all deserve an "atta girl !"

Hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving and cheers on the Huskers

Wow! November! Hard to believe it's here already. Hope everyone had a safe and Happy Halloween. Hard to imagine having snow almost 3 weeks before Halloween! Ok, lets get started. First, the Huskers. OK, enough of that subject.

Once again I ask that, if you have yet to renew your membership, please make it a point to get it done soon. The heat is on from the state to get this done.

I hate to inform you, but this year's Nut Fry had been postponed for the time being. We are looking to do it maybe sometime next year during the warmer weather so we can use the outside eatery to serve you better. We apologize for the short notice, but we feel, as a whole, this is a wise decision at this time.

On a personal note, this Commander found his first lady, and we were married Oct. 2nd, Karen is a wonderful woman, and we are great for each other. On our honeymoon to Bella Vista, Arkansas, I was visiting with my mother's neighbor Francis. She was telling me about the quilts and pillow cases she has been making for the injured Veterans coming back from the Middle East. The organization she is volunteering for is called "Quilts for Valor." This is some great stuff they are doing for our Veterans! Francis is 85 years old and is still able to muster up the energy to do this for our Veterans. Think about this a little bit. What can you do to help? We are always looking for volunteers at the Post home to help out whenever possible. I ask that, if you have the time, we would appreciate any time you can give to help at the Post.

I can't begin to thank all of the volunteers who have found the time to keep our new Post up and running. The next time you are at the Post, be sure to make the effort to thank them for all of their hard work. While I'm still on the subject, I would like to Thank our newest volunteer bartender, her name is Jackie. She has been doing a great job and is there when needed. Be sure you say hi when you come in, and don't forget to tip those wonderful bartenders. Trust me. I know from experience that this is a tough job! I gave it a try! It was not my cup of tea, or should I say my mug of beer! So please, be patient when wasting for drinks or playing Keno.

I hope everyone has a great November, and let's remember what we are all about - our Veterans! God Bless you all and God Bless America!

Curt Jordan, S.A.L. Commander

We are rapidly approaching the holidays with many Veteran activities planned. By this writing, the Halloween Party will be history and our donations to the Youth Emergency Services will have been delivered. YES is for homeless children in Omaha. Baby and personal items were donated in remembrance of Make a Difference Day. Clothing and winter gear were delivered to the VA Medical Center for Stand Down, which serves Omaha's homeless Veterans. Dollar Days were held on December 9th, which is called "Gifts for Yanks Who Gave." These are Department sponsored, but would not be successful without Unit support.

A Veterans Day Program will be held on November 9th at the Good Samaritan Home. The annual Gift Shop will open on November 30th at the VA Medical Center and will be open for two weeks. If anyone is interested in attending these events or helping with the gift shop, just give me a call @ 891-6760.

Thanks to all of our hard working ladies and don't forget to thank a Vet on Veterans Day November 11th.

A Field Service Orientation was held for Auxiliary members after the August meeting. This allows the hours worked in the field service for the Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation to be counted by National. These accumulated hours are reported to the government and increases our effectiveness in lobbying for the Veterans' issues. Another Field Service Orientation will be held at our Post on November 15th in case you missed this one and want to attend.

FROM THE ADJUTANT

Membership renewals have been coming in steadily. Just a reminder to those who have not renewed their membership to either come in to the Post and pay or mail in your payment.

The next reminder from National will be sent December 1, 2009. If you know an eligible Veteran or sons, daughters, or grandson of a Veteran, bring them to the club and encourage them to join. Let them know what the American Legion has to offer. A lot of you have been calling about your membership notices. These are sent out by National. If you receive a notice and have already paid your dues and received your card, ignore that notice. If you have already paid your dues, but have not received your card within 2 weeks, please call and let me know. I will check the status of your card.

For those of you who wish to buy a lifetime membership (PUFL), the cost varies by age. Starting October 1, 2009, you can make monthly payments up to 36 months for this. You will then receive payment coupons from National. Hopefully this will make it easier for you if you want this benefit, but cannot afford a one-time payment. If you have any other questions about eligibility or membership, please feel free to call me. Thank you for your support and service to our country.
